Despite having received some hints about it, nobody really knows what the One Piece truly is. It is only in the final saga that the truth about the treasure will be revealed to the fans once Luffy reaches Laugh Tale and finds the treasure himself.

The Void Century is a blank period of 100 years that took place 800-900 years before the current time of the One Piece world. No information about this period is known to people and it has, quite craftily, been hidden from the entire world.
Although there are individuals who know about the happenings of the Void Century, the fans don't know what transpired during this 100-year blank in history. Once Luffy reaches Laugh Tale, the true history of the world will finally be revealed.
