Olivia Wilde responded coyly to reports circulating that she is in the process of developing a female-centric Sony Marvel film, which will most likely become the world’s first Spider-Woman feature.

Although to many fans this appeared to be nothing but a pipe dream, it was revealed nearly that Wilde had officially signed on to develop and direct a brand-new Marvel movie for Sony. Wilde's vision for the film was contingent on one rule, that the film she would be making for them would be completely told and centered around a female character and her overall perspective. For fans of Wilde, this requirement of female inclusivity shouldn’t come as a surprise given that her film Booksmart also focused on two female leads. She seemed to confirm reports that her new Marvel film will tell the story of Jessica Drew, otherwise known as Spider-Woman. Wilde seemed to confirm this news by responding to the fan rumors with a spider emoji on social media, but more recently she played coy during an interview with Variety.

While out promoting her new film Don't Worry Darling, Wilde dropped some hints about her secret Marvel project. That said, she was careful not to reveal any spoilers. “That, I can’t say a word about. Yeah, no — I can’t say anything about it. I have to bury myself in the couch now," Wilde said. "I will say that I think the Marvel approach of allowing newer filmmakers to come into the fold and have access to those tools of the Marvel universe is incredibly exciting. I am a big fan of what they’re doing over there, but, yeah, I can’t confirm whether that is what that is. But, that would be cool.”

Wilde is famously renowned in Hollywood and is praised for her work both in front of the camera and behind as well. She is most recognized for her roles in movies such as Tron: Legacy, Cowboys & Aliens, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and The Lazarus Effect. In the recent few years, Wilde's fan base was able to witness her transition to becoming a director.

She made her directorial debut back in 2019 with the release of the hit coming-of-age movie, Booksmart. Wilde received lots of glowing praise and critical success when others finally saw her flex her directorial chops with Booksmart. This new-found sense of passion Wilde found with directing has now led to the development of her upcoming psychological thriller, Don't Worry Darling.

Wilde and Marvel first began to be in cahoots with one another back in 2019, when the director expressed her deep desire to eventually create and/or star in a Marvel film at some point in her career. Perhaps Wilde is the newest extended member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and knowing her talent, she will not disappoint if she brings Spider-Woman to life.
