Rumors have claimed that Facebook and Oculus are planning to release a new standalone VR headset, presumably continuing the Oculus Quest headset line. Now, more evidence has come to light that seems to show the new Oculus headset in detail, along with a rumored release date or announcement date.
The Oculus Quest launched back in 2019, and quickly rose to popularity due to its ability to provide a virtual reality on PC-like experience without wires. Even now, people are experiencing difficulty finding one due to scalpers and an increased demand from gamers wanting to escape the coronavirus pandemic lockdown with the Quest.
Just days ago, a render of a possible Oculus Quest 2 appeared on the Internet, showcasing a new white and black design and revised head straps. Now, new renders and photographs have leaked, providing a better look at the alleged device. Now that multiple views of the device are visible, it's become clear that the IPD slider is seemingly absent from the device. However, there's a notable bit of space between the edge of the encased lenses and the frame holding them, which makes it look as though they may still be adjustable in some way.
Notably, the same leaker who initially revealed the render of the supposed VR headset has since released a cryptic tweet featuring an image of the device from another angle, simply stating "15 Sept." Without further information to go on, excited Oculus fans have suggested that this may either be a release date or an official announcement date. However, UploadVR has also said that a reliable source claims the device will enter full production as early as next week. This could conceivably mean that the first release wave could be ready by September 15.
In the meantime, it's still unclear exactly what this Oculus is intended to be. Without information on the specs under the hood, it's been theorized that this could either be an improved, upgraded version of the Oculus Quest, or even a middle ground between the Oculus Quest and the recently discontinued Oculus Go, perhaps offering an even more affordable entry price than the current Quest for VR newcomers. In lieu of further leaks or official announcements from Oculus, fans will just have to wait to see what comes on September 15.
