Square Enix has had its fair share of groundbreaking releases in the past, and the developer knows what it takes to deliver good sequels in a franchise. Square Enix has posted release after release in the Final Fantasy franchise, with so many installments available that it's easy to forget the company also creates other games. Octopath Traveler 2 is one of several upcoming projects from Square Enix slated to hit the streets in 2023, with more details emerging about new characters and classes gracing the franchise as its release draws closer. Throne is one of the new characters in the Octopath Traveler franchise, belonging to the Thieves class. Square Enix uses the Thieves in quite a few of its games, as it also appears in Bravely Default 2 and the earlier edition of Octopath Traveler.

In the first installment of Octopath Traveler, Therion played the role of the Thief to perfection, gaining a status of infamy throughout the realm for his exploits. The road to his unconventional success was by no means rosy, as he had to endure betrayal from his partner, Darius, about 10 years before the start of Octopath Traveler's story. Darius' ambitions to rule the world led him to join the Cianno group, and they drove him to push Therion off a cliff as a condition for entering their ranks. For Octopath Traveler 2, Square Enix is bringing a new direction to the role of the Thief through Throne.

New Thief Throne and Outgoing Therion Have A Lot in Common

Octopath Traveler Therion

Throne and Therion, sharing the same character class in the Octopath Traveler franchise, have the same core story of freedom, although the characters have different paths to achieving their shared goal - leaving their current lives behind for good. Where Therion in Octopath Traveler specialized in upper-class burglary, Throne, from the reveals, seems like a petty thief - largely interested in pickpocketing. Throne - full name Throne Anguis - is a member of the Blacksnakes, a group running a Brightlands city from the shadows.

However, Throne has grown weary of the bloodshed that comes with her affiliation and is on a journey to secure her freedom from the Blacksnakes' clutches. To assist her in her efforts, Throne has an array of actions and abilities that help her be the best thief she can be. She has two Path Actions, Steal and Ambush, which players can call upon to gain valuable items. Using steal comes with a certain level of risk, and Throne must flee the scene undetected otherwise her reputation will be tarnished. Her talent - Blessing of Darkness - elevates the attacking stats of her entire team.

The Thief Class is a Nightmare for Opponents

The Thief Class is not new to the Octopath Traveler franchise, with Therion playing the role in the first edition. Appearing again as Throne's primary job in Octopath Traveler 2, Thieves are a box of tricks that are a handful for opponents in different ways. In Octopath Traveler, Thieves made excellent complementary partners to the Dancers Class thanks to their ability to reduce their enemies' stats with debuffs like Shackle Foe and Armor Corrosive.

In addition to their destructive debuffs, Thieves were blindingly fast and could wield deadly weapon types like daggers and swords, perfect tools for dealing quick and decisive blows to their opponents. Their speed in attack also extended to the defensive end, using skills like Dodge and Evade to escape their opponents' attacks. Thieves add an extra flavor of gameplay for enjoyers of the franchise, serving as excellent characters both in exploration and combat. In the case of Throne, one of the new characters coming to Octopath Traveler 2 alongside Temenos, her mysterious background and dynamism will make her a fast favorite with fans.

Octopath Traveler 2 launches February 24, 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, and Switch.
