Reputation returns to Octopath Traveler 2 as a core gameplay mechanic that determines what Path Actions you can perform within towns and villages. Unlike in other turn-based role-playing games, you do not need to gain renown with the local inhabitants by doing them favors. They will always hold you in high regard.

However, get caught five times while doing rogue chance-based Path Actions (Allure, Scrutinize, Steal, and Provoke) and you will lose your reputation stats in Octopath Traveler 2. The only way to perform any Path Actions in that specific town or village again will be by restoring your reputation with the locals.

Every town and village tracks your reputation separately.

Visit a Tavern to Restore Your Reputation in Octopath Traveler 2

Octopath Traveler 2 - Tavern's Barkeeper

The first and foremost way to restore your reputation is by visiting a Tavern in Octopath Traveler 2. They can be found in every town. Speak with the barkeeper inside to pay a fee as a bribe to spread good rumors about you. That will completely restore your reputation, and let your characters perform their Path Actions on the locals once again.

The price to restore your reputation varies from town to town. Taverns found while completing the final chapters in Octopath Traveler 2 will always charge a higher fee, so watch your actions if you are running low on money.

Taverns are important field locations to scout during your journey. They let you hear tales to continue the story of a character and change your party lineup. It is also where you can manage your equipment and equip the best weapons for your characters before departing.

Level up to Stop Failing Path Actions

Octopath Traveler 2 Victory Screen

Every Path Action is dependent on your current level. The higher the level of a character, the lower the chance of failing a Path Action and losing your reputation points. Hence, leveling up fast and farming experience helps you keep your reputation.

It also stops you from spending a ton of money on Taverns to get back in the good books of the townspeople. That is money you save to spend on other things, such as on Partitio's powerful Hired Help skill to use a variety of different attacks.

Exit the Game to Reset Your Reputation

Octopath Traveler 2 - Running Through A Cobblestone Street

Here is a little trick to restore your reputation for free in Octopath Traveler 2. If you have failed all your Path Actions while trying to steal from a guard, for example, immediately exit the game and jump back in to see your reputation back to normal. You can then attempt to try to steal from the guard again, with hopefully better results than the first time. This, however, does mean that you must save your game after entering every town.
