Do not let the name fool you. There are no motherly qualities about Mother in Octopath Traveler 2. She is a cruel and sadistic character who recruits children from orphanages to steal and kill for a criminal organization called the Blacksnakes.

Throne, one of the new playable characters in Octopath Traveler 2, was recruited by Mother to do the organization's bidding similarly. She has felt the whip on her back for years, but no longer. Throne's storyline is all about gaining freedom from the Blacksnakes by removing an acidic collar around her neck. The keys to the collar are with Mother and Father, two antagonists in her storyline who also are leaders of the Blacksnakes.

Mother will cross your paths first, and she is no pushover. There are a few bosses in Octopath Traveler 2 who players find difficult to beat, Mother being one of them. She can temporarily stop your characters from attacking for the next few turns, leaving your party at the mercy of her whip. There is a little trick to this boss fight to make it easier. You will need to prepare beforehand. There are also a few items you need to bring. Here's what you do.

Octopath Traveler 2 brings in a lot of new content for fans of the RPG franchise. Here are the best new features.

How to Beat Mother in Octopath Traveler 2

Octopath Traveler 2 - Mother Lashing of Love

Mother does not fight alone. She will bring along an aide in an attempt to split your focus. While most bosses in Octopath Traveler 2 tend to respawn their minions, Mother does not. Hence, the best strategy is to focus on her aide first and remove him from the board in as few turns as possible. Mother becomes quite easy to beat when she is all alone.

Status Effects

  • Normal: Blindness
  • Resist: Poison
  • Immune: Silence, Terror, Confusion, Sleep, Unconsciousness, and Instant Death

Mother's aide has nearly half of her total health in Octopath Traveler 2, meaning he will go down a lot quicker. Luckily, he does not block any major weaknesses. You should be able to take him down easily after breaking his shield.

However, be wary of a couple of his attacks. He can inflict blind with his Eye Gouge attack. This can be problematic if he targets your characters who do physical damage. He can also inflict a physical defense debuff with his Shouder Smash attack.

Most importantly, though, the aide does powerful charged attacks whenever Mother uses Lashings of Love on him. This attack, in particular, is why you must remove her aide from the board as quickly as possible. The fight will become overly challenging if you try to juggle both Mother and her aide. The longer the fight goes, the lower your survival chances become.

Focusing on her aide does not mean completely ignoring Mother in Octopath Traveler 2 . Remember that Throne's Thief Class is excellent for debuffing enemies . Use her Shackle Foe and Armor Corrosive skills to reduce Mother's damage and amplify your damage to her respectively.

Octopath Traveler 2 - Mother Battle

With her aide gone, you can continue peppering Mother with your best attacks. She, however, has one of the most annoying skills among all bosses in Octopath Traveler 2. Mother Knows Best inflicts Terror on one of your characters to prevent them from using Boost or Divine Skills for the next three or four turns. This can cripple your damage dealers and reduce your overall damage output, which you do not want against Mother.

The best way to counter that is to equip your main damage dealers with either the Silent Bandana headgear or the Calming Stone accessory. Both items make the wearer immune to terror-inducing attacks while giving some reasonably good defense stats.

There is a red chest in Throne's Chapter 3: Mother's Garden that contains a Calming Stone. Head straight from the entrance and then go left past the hedge garden to find the chest.

If you are still struggling, try to get to the Nameless Village early in the game or any other high-level town to get some good items. The Nameless Village, in particular, has shops that sell you some pretty powerful weapons and shields.

When going over her other attacks, there are only two that you need to be ready for. Whip of Terror and Double Lashing deal a lot of physical damage. Bring along plenty of healing items, such as Healing Grapes, to save your characters from the brink of death. You can also equip them with armor to boost physical defense in Octopath Traveler 2.

Something else to watch out for is her Blind attack. Mother can force one of your characters to become unconscious. Herbs of Revival can counter the debuff. If you do not have them, the inflicted character will have no choice but to lose the next few turns.

Mother can cause one of your characters to become unconscious. Use Herbs of Revival to counter that or lose the next couple of turns.

In summary, the Mother boss fight becomes a matter of healing and damage once you take care of her minion and terror attack. While she will increase her shields three times during the battle, it should only be a minor inconvenience for your damage dealers.

Once the battle is over, you will finally have one key to Throne's collar. The second key is with Father who is a much more difficult boss in comparison, so make sure to only go after him after leveling up fast in Octopath Traveler 2.

Best Party Setup for the Mother Boss Fight

Octopath Traveler 2 - Mother Post Battle

Mother does not require you to prepare the best party in Octopath Traveler 2. She can be taken down by just about any good party combination. For your ease, though, having the following characters in your party will make the boss fight easier.

  • Throne will obviously be part of the party because it is her storyline. She is also one of the best starting characters in Octopath Traveler 2, so do not make light of her skills.
  • Temenos has healing skills that come in pretty handy during the boss fight. His other skills can mitigate a lot of damage, making him an excellent character to pair with Throne.
  • Hikari and Ochette are both worthy of being your main damage dealers based on their wide selection of physical attacks. They start as a Warrior and Hunter by default, which are the best jobs in Octopath Traveler 2.
  • Osvald can be the final member of your party. He can use a variety of elemental attacks. His command of Ice attacks is excellent against Mother who is weak against Ice.
