The town of Flamechurch in Octopath Traveler 2 is where the story of the protagonist Temenos begins. The town is very religious thanks to the massive cathedral of the Sacred Flame built just to the north, so it should be no surprise that both side stories in this area have to do with pilgrims and the cathedral.

One of these side quests is relatively easy and involves going around Flamechurch and the cathedral to find the required materials. However, the second quest is more involved and demands that players visit several second-tier towns throughout Octopath Traveler 2 to find everything they need.

Pilgrim Protection Guide

Octopath Traveler 2 Pilgrim Protection

To the left of the small church in town is a man known as Elder. He's worried about the safety of the pilgrims heading up to the cathedral, and he thinks it would help to light the path using some Sacred Flame Candles. However, he'll need three candles to make the path safe.

The candles are possessions held by three NPCs in the Flamechurch area.

  • One of them is a Cleric who stands just outside the church during the day and just inside the church at night.
  • The second NPC is another Cleric who stands on the right side of the church during the day and visits a spot left of the town save point at night.
  • The last Cleric is in the Flamechurch: Cathedral Entrance area, and while he stands next to the central fountain during the day, he's over by the gravestones at night.

Players can use any means they like to get the three Sacred Flame Candles. Once they bring all three to the Elder, he'll reward the party with 5,000 leaves, a Fortifying Nut, and a Tough Nut. As a secondary reward, players who enter the Flamechurch Pilgrims' Way will notice that it has more candles and no more random encounters.

Cathedral Window Repair Guide

Octopath Traveler 2 Cathedral Window Repair

The big stained-glass window in the Flamechurch Cathedral broke during Temenos's opening chapter, and now one of the Clerics is trying to repair the damage. However, to restore the sacred protections, he'll need more than just glass: he needs a large soulstone of the fire, ice, thunder, and wind varieties. This means that he needs soulstones with an (L) next to their name.

Players won't find any large soulstones in the starting towns or areas, but there are plenty to get in second-tier settlements like Montwise, Clockbank, and Tropu'hopu. Some NPCs in these towns have large soulstones, and Stealing, Purchasing, Entreating, or Mugging them is the easiest way to get the needed items. To save some time, here's a list of NPCs who definitely have the right soulstones:

  • A Scholar in the Montwise Library during the day has both a Thunder Soulstone (L) and a Fire Soulstone (L).
  • Also, in Montwise, but only at night, there's a Gardener in front of the house to the right of the library. His information leads to a hidden item, and that hidden item is a Wind Soulstone (L).
  • In Tropu'hopu, a Boy standing next to the Cat Connoisseur has an Ice Soulstone (L).

Once players bring one of each soulstone to the Cleric, he'll fix the window, lecture on how it works, and give the party 8,000 leaves and a Psychic Staff. The staff is particularly good during the early game, and it offers a large amount of elemental defense. Players may also notice a lot of new pilgrims in the cathedral who have come to see the fixed window.

Octopath Traveler 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, and Switch.
