  • The GPU is priced at $999 MSRP, providing a welcome price drop for consumers.
  • The 4080 SUPER outperforms the 4080 but still lags behind the higher-end 4090 GPU, which is 25% faster when gaming at 4K.

The Nvidia RTX 4080 SUPER is now available for purchase. The 4080 SUPER presumably marks the final 40-series refresh for Nvidia, following the 4070 SUPER and the 4070 Ti SUPER. What some may find surprising is that the new 4080 SUPER features only a marginal performance bump, but it is accompanied by a welcome price drop that knocks the GPU to just under $1,000.

Despite having just been released, some lucky PC gamers received the RTX 4080 SUPER early. However, these GPUs were essentially expensive desk ornaments until driver support launched. Now that the GPU is finally, officially released, enthusiasts have been able to put the graphics card through its paces, testing it against the standard model and even the high-powered 4090.

A major new PC feature is being supported in the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West PC port, and it could lead to a smoother visual experience.

Both the RTX 4080 SUPER and reviews for the GPU are out as of today. The new 4080 SUPER model is only 3-5 percent faster than the standard 4080, but it also comes in at $200 less. That being said, those who have been shopping for the best RTX 4080 GPUs know that prices can soar much higher than the $1,199 MSRP. So, if available at its MSRP of $999, the 4080 SUPER could offer even more of a discount. That's a big if, however.

Nvidia RTX 4080 SUPER Overview

  • 3-5% faster than 4080
  • $999 MSRP
  • Available January 31, 2024

At both 1440 and 4K resolutions, the 4080 SUPER outperformed the 4080, but typically only marginally. Most of the time, the 4080 SUPER is able to eke out a handful of extra FPS, but both lag behind Nvidia's top-of-the-line 4090 GPU which admittedly comes in at $600 more than the latest refresh. That said, the price drop on the new SUPER model makes the RTX 4080 vs RTX 4090 debate more interesting given the increased gap in MSRP and slightly decreased gap in performance. For those curious, the 4090 is still roughly 25% faster than the 4080 SUPER when gaming at 4K.

Those upgrading their respective PC gaming rigs will also want to know which CPU best pairs with the RTX 4080. For those looking purely to game or do a mix of playing and productivity, pairing a GPU with the right CPU is important for maximizing performance.

The latest updated graphics cards might very well be the last series of new Nvidia GPUs until the inevitable 50-series is released. With the refreshed units just having launched, there is still likely quite a bit of time before the next series of GPUs from Nvidia is announced and made available for purchase.
