Despite its rocky launch, No Man's Sky has gone on to become one of the biggest, most complex, and most exciting sci-fi games around. A series of huge updates have overhauled old mechanics as well as introduced new features to the game, giving players plenty to do.

One of the most exciting and highly anticipated additions to No Man's Sky was the inclusion of pirates with the Outlaws update. Outlaws added a ton of new content to the game, including solar ships, Outlaw Stations, and solar ships. One cosmetic addition in particular caught players' eyes: the hood known as the Shroud of Freedom. Here's everything players need to know about unlocking this elusive cosmetic.

Accepting The Mission

No Man's Sky - Beacon

Unlocking the Shroud of Freedom requires the player to undertake the "Under a Rebel Star" mission. To begin the mission the player must visit a regular star system (one that isn't controlled by pirates). The game has a big map, but fortunately, it's easy to navigate. Once there, the player must activate their ship's pulse drive towards empty space. After a few moments, exit pulse drive, and an emergency broadcast from the starship Signal Echo will come over the communicator. Answer the Communicator and accept the coordinates within the message.

The Distress Beacon

No Man's Sky - Under a Rebel Star

Examine the logs contained within the distress beacon, then choose the "Recover cockpit recording" option, followed by "Take rendezvous beacon." Doing so will activate sentinel drones in the area, so the player will either have to fight or flee from these deadly robots. Once the sentinels are no longer a threat, activate the Rendezvous Beacon in the inventory to receive another mission marker.

Fly to the planet with the new rendezvous point, and use the Starship Scanner to ping the beacon. A reply will come across the Communicator, so access it to get the message before proceeding to the next objective: another planet within the system. Land on the surface and use the Sweep Scanner once more to find the next location: an observatory with a terminal inside. Interact with the terminal to receive a message as well as the Ticket to Freedom. Go to the inventory and select the Ticket to Accept the Invitation. There are only a few more steps before the player can return to their outlaw ways.

Outlaw Skies

No Man's Sky - Shroud of Freedom

The mission marker will now move to a pirate-controlled star system. Jump there, go to the Outlaw Station, which pirates use for smuggling and other nefarious activities, and speak to the NPCs within, choosing the "Ask about the Voice of Freedom" option. After speaking with enough NPCs, the player will be awarded the Shroud of Freedom. Before leaving, check the Subverted Station Core and choose "Request the Voice of Freedom" to receive the mission's next objective.

Leave the station via ship to receive a task from the Station Core to disrupt traffic records. Accept to task to receive a Forged Passport. Jump to another regulated star system and head to its space station. There, interact with the Station Core and select the "Restore Standing" option, which will use the Forged Passport.

Leave the station via ship once more to complete the mission and receive the title Glorious Survivor. The player can now put on the Shroud of Freedom at any Appearance Modifier (found on space stations). At the moment, the Shroud can only be worn as an Anomaly, so the player will have to select that race within the Appearance Modifier. Now the player has something to show off besides a shiny new freighter.

No Man's Sky is available now on PC, macOS, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch.
