The Nintendo Switch is one of the best selling consoles of this generation, becoming more and more popular as the years pass. Each year is a better one for the Switch; perhaps because of these amazing sales, Nintendo recently reduced the cost of individual Joy-Cons. This could mean big things are coming up for the Switch, and perhaps if the rumors are true, the Switch Pro.
In spite of the infamous Joy-Con drift that Nintendo has been sued several times for, the Joy-Con is a pretty well-designed controller. It's unique, for sure, to fit the unique design of the Switch, and this sort of price reduction is a bit surprising for the big N. As such, it's worth mentioning that things like this sometimes mean something new is on the way, and that's exciting for a few reasons.
Could This Joy-Con Price Reduction Signal New Design is on the Way?
Back in June 2020, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa released an apology for the Joy-Con drift, say that "We apologize for any inconvenience caused to our customers regarding Joy-Con controllers... We are continuing to improve our products." But what "improve our products" could mean anything.
Software updates to the Nintendo Switch have been added bit by bit over the course of 2020, changing small things in order to improve the Joy-Con conductivity and possibly some of the issues with the drift. Ultimately, however, the Joy-Con needs a complete physical overhaul to get rid of the problem, so when Nintendo announced a price drop for Joy-Cons, some may have wondered if it means something new is on the horizon. And if there's some new version of the Joy-Cons on the way, it would stand to reason that a physical change to them would mean that a new Switch was also in the works.
The Nintendo Switch Pro and New Joy-Cons
It's worth noting that Nintendo has patented several different kinds of Joy-Con, although there is only one kind currently available. As such, one of these new kinds may not work with the standard layout of the Switch. It could be that these theoretical new Joy-Cons are just for the standard Switch, but it would also seem unlikely.
Rumors of a Nintendo Switch Pro have been swirling for quite some time, compounded by the fact that a "lite" version was also released last year, and an improved hyrbid model of the Switch might also need new controllers, if only to correct the Joy-Con drift issue. While it's not necessarily proof, it gives fans of the Switch even more reason to celebrate the price decrease and hope for the future of the Switch.
