In September of 2018, Nintendo Switch owners were introduced to the Nintendo Switch Online Service. This service was a first for Nintendo, charging players $20 per year to play online competitively in games like Splatoon 2 and cooperatively in games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons. While many players have adopted this subscription, it seems that Nintendo is hoping to entice even more with a new free trial.
From now until November 9, 2020, Switch players can jump into a one week free trial for the Nintendo Switch Online Service. To give the service a try, players will need to make their way to the My Nintendo Rewards page on Nintendo's site. There they will be able to redeem the offer for 0 Platinum Points. It's worth noting that this free trial is only available for players without a current membership, so those that have an active subscription are out of luck on this offer.
The Nintendo Switch Online Service has many incentives for joining. In addition to being able to play games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online, players also have access to the free-to-play battle royale, Tetris 99, where players compete against 99 other Tetris players for supremacy. The game features many timed events that unlock new themes based on various Nintendo properties such as Paper Mario: The Origami King.
Nintendo has another battle royale for players that prefer platformers to puzzlers. Super Mario Bros. 35 is a new battle royale where players compete in 35-player matches to see who is the best at running through a gauntlet of original Super Mario Bros. levels. However, players should know that, unless Nintendo decides to reverse course, Super Mario Bros. 35 is currently set to leave the Nintendo eShop on March 31, 2021.
While the Nintendo Switch Online Service is certainly aimed at players looking to take on competition online, there are still incentives to try out the service for players that are only interested in single-player games. Nintendo Switch Online Service members have access to a vast library of NES and SNES games to play as long as they have an internet connection. And if that isn't enough, there are currently rumors that Nintendo 64 games may soon come as part of the service.
So for those players that are not one of the 26 million Nintendo Switch Online Service members, this free trial seems like as good of a time as any to try out the service. After all, it sure is hard to beat the price of 'free.'
