At long last, what looks to be the heavily rumored Nintendo Switch console revision was finally unveiled today as the Nintendo Switch OLED model. Rumors and supposed leaks ran rampant as E3 approached in June, with many insiders teasing a pre-E3 reveal, enhanced resolutions, and more. But the Switch OLED seems mainly to focus on its new 7-inch display.

Aside from the OLED screen, the new Switch model features a much-needed kickstand overhaul, improved sound quality, increased internal storage, and a built-in ethernet port in the console's dock. However, all this talk about a handheld with an impressive OLED display has many fans thinking back to an innovative albeit less successful system from back in 2011: the PS Vita.

As topics like "Nintendo," "OLED," and "No 4k" began to trend all over Twitter following the Switch OLED's official reveal this morning, so did "Vita." Many fans began sharing fond memories of the PSP successor, tweeting and creating memes about how the console's OLED screen proved it was ahead of its time, and how Nintendo seems to be playing a game of catch up when it comes to the Switch OLED.

While the PS Vita only ended up selling a fraction of as many units as its predecessor the PSP did, the excitement of fans on Twitter today has proven that they haven't forgotten about the handheld console, despite how some look at it in retrospect. Some Twitter memes even mocked the Switch OLED for lacking simple PS Vita features like game folders and themes, things that Switch owners have desperately clamored for since the Switch initially released back in 2017.

After announcing that it would be shutting down the Vita's online marketplace, Sony recently changed its plans and assured fans that it would keep the PS Vita store open for an indefinite amount of time.

While it doesn't seem incredibly likely, fans have also hoped for Sony to make a handheld gaming comeback eventually as well. As for the Nintendo Switch OLED model, it is certainly interesting to see which insider rumors, reports, and claims have come to fruition after months of waiting. While the console revision will feature an Nvidia Tegra processor, it doesn't seem to come equipped with any of Nvidia's machine learning DLSS technology as previously rumored.

It also seems that the Switch OLED won't be phasing out the standard Nintendo Switch model, but will instead live alongside it and the Switch Lite as a new member of the Switch family. Releasing alongside Metroid Dread and just in time for titles like WarioWare: Get it Together!, and Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it looks like Nintendo fans have a lot to look forward to this fall.

The Nintendo Switch OLED model releases on October 8.
