The Nintendo Switch will only have five launch titles when the console launches on March, according to a concerning tweet posted by the official Nintendo UK account.

At last night's Nintendo Switch reveal event, Nintendo confirmed several games for the upcoming console, giving gamers plenty of reasons to consider picking one up. Some of the games announced for the console include Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Super Mario Odyssey. A FIFA game and NBA 2K18 were also confirmed for the console, much to the delight of gaming sports fans.

However, in a disappointing turn of events, it seems that many of the games that were shown during the event will not be available to players upon the console's release (in the UK, at least). A tweet by the official Nintendo UK account confirms that the Nintendo Switch will have just five launch titles, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, 1-2 Switch, Super Bomberman R, Skylanders Imaginators, and Just Dance 2017 launching alongside the console on March 3.

While the tweet also confirms that a few other games – including SnipperClips, Fast RMX, and Has-Been Heroes – will launch at some point during March, these are not launch titles according to Nintendo UK. And, although it should be noted that launch line-ups can differ from region to region, it seems unlikely that Nintendo would launch a console in a major territory with so few titles while other regions get a dozen or so games.

In comparison, the Nintendo Wii U had over 20 UK launch titles – and not only was the console unable to get off to a flying start in terms of sales – but sales of the console have been abysmal ever since. While 50% of game developers think that the Nintendo Switch can outsell the Wii U, it's understandable why some are cautiously optimistic that the console can out-do its beleaguered predecessor.

It's also easy to see why Nintendo only expects to ship 2 million Switch units during March and why the company's stocks dropped again after the reveal event. While there will no doubt be plenty of people willing to get the console on launch day – with the interest in Switch pre-orders indicating that – there will be many more who are put off by the lack of variety right from the get-go.

Five games isn't a lot to convince someone to buy an entirely new console, especially not when the Nintendo Switch's price is as high as it is. It seems likely that many will hold out on buying the console until more games are available and until that price comes down.
