The Virtual Console, a system on the Wii, Wii U and 3DS that allowed players to download a mother lode of titles from classic, old-school consoles, was an incredibly popular idea when it first came to be. So much so, that its absence from the Nintendo Switch left many fans scratching their heads in confusion.

And while the Switch does offer those subscribed to its online service access to a bunch of retro NES titles, many find this to be an inferior downgrade. The Big N did promise, however, that more titles from other consoles would be made available in the future and we just might have an idea what those consoles are.

According to one KevDoy on Twitter, the JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) for the Switch's eShop has had two new categories recently added - one for N64 and one for DS. The obvious conclusion is that the Virtual Console is going to make a comeback and will include titles from these consoles, which if replies to the original Tweet are anything to go by, is making some people very happy.

But expectations must be kept in check. KevDoy themselves even stated that they don't entirely know what it means. It could end up just being a placeholder for something else or maybe, rather than bring back the Virtual Console, Nintendo simply plans on adding N64 and DS titles to their online service as a further incentive to purchase a subscription. Considering some players' displeasure with the current offerings, with some even hacking the NES emulator to play games not yet supported by it, this could help make the service seem more worthwhile to some fans.

The Switch's online service, after being teased for well over a year, finally launched last week and has been under heavy scrutiny ever since. Most criticize having the once free online multiplayer now taken away and Nintendo's handling of cloud saves, with some citing that despite being cheaper, both Sony and Microsoft's online services offer much better deals.

Nintendo Switch owners who might still be interested are able to download a 7-day free trial. Players can then purchase either a 1-month, a 3-month or 12-month subscription for $3.99, $7.99 and $19.99 respectively.
