Nintendo has started sending Nintendo Switch units to the press, giving fans their first detailed look at the system and how it will function. A number of videos have appeared online detailing the console's user interface as well as the set-up process, which will allow players to customize their profile icon and either import or create a Mii.

Like the 3DS, Wii U, and Wii, the Nintendo Switch features Mii characters that players can create to represent them in some games. It's unclear at the time of this writing which games will utilize the Mii characters, as it doesn't appear any games in the launch lineup will do so. And since Nintendo Switch is ditching Miiverse and StreetPass, we also don't know which apps will use the Miis, if any at all.

Besides creating a Mii, players also have the ability to customize their own profile icon. Presumably, this icon will appear next to a player's Nintendo ID when they play Nintendo Switch games online. Players have a wide variety of images to choose from when it comes to customizing their icon, including a number of characters and items from popular Nintendo franchises like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, and more.

As can be seen in the video, there are some Nintendo characters noticeably absent from the lineup of available profile icon images, including Wario, any characters from F-Zero or Fire Emblem, and more. While some fans may be disappointed that their favorite character isn't available to choose from when customizing their profile, it's entirely possible that Nintendo will update the Nintendo Switch in the future to include more profile customization options.

Perhaps profile customization options will be added to the Nintendo Switch to coincide with the release of certain games, or maybe new customization options are unlocked by accomplishing tasks in games. For example, if Nintendo announces the rumored Metroid game that some believe is in development for Switch at Retro Studios, it may release more Metroid profile customization options to celebrate the occasion.

Of course, that's just speculation at this time. Once people have more time to test the Nintendo Switch, it will become more apparent how profile customization and Miis work with the new system. Though it's possible that some features Nintendo has planned for profile customization may come to the console at a later date, similarly to the Virtual Console.

Nintendo Switch will be available on March 3, 2017.
