Highlights

  • Nintendo releases regular updates for the Switch, but the recent update for Version 17.0.0 doesn't add much besides an updated list of blocked words.
  • The new update bans words including a "Nazi phrase" and Japanese phrases involving killing, as well as the Dutch word for leprosy.
  • Nintendo is likely focusing on the Switch 2 console and may not have major updates planned for the current Switch, but that remains to be seen.

Nintendo has released a new update for Version 17.0.0 of the Switch that seemingly adds to its list of blocked words and does little to nothing else. Like all console makers, Nintendo releases updates for the Switch on a regular basis. Sometimes these updates are substantial and add meaningful new features, but other times they don't do much at all.

Last month, Nintendo released an update for the Switch. The Switch Version 17.0.0 update included "General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience," but otherwise didn't do all that much that would be noticeable to users. Now Nintendo has issued a rebootless update for Switch Version 17.0.0 that updates its list of banned words. Since it's a rebootless update, Nintendo fans don't even have to turn their Switch off for the update to apply - it should happen automatically assuming one has their console connected to the Internet.

Nintendo's Next Console Could Support VR

A recently published patent reveals details on a unique device that suggests the possibility of the next Nintendo console having VR support.

Nintendo has not released official patch notes for the new Switch console update, but as reported by Nintendo Life, dataminer OatmealDome has discovered what exactly the newest update does. According to OatmealDome, the new update adds more words to the Switch's banned words list, including a "Nazi phrase" that is now banned in all languages, "Japanese phrases involving killing" and the Dutch version of the word "Leprosy."

Some Nintendo Switch fans may be holding out hope for bigger Switch console updates that add new features, but that seems unlikely. While it's entirely possible that Nintendo has some big changes planned for the Switch, the more likely scenario is that the company is turning its attention to the Switch 2 console and will instead focus its efforts on that device. It remains to be seen when exactly the Switch 2 will be unveiled and released, but 2024 seems like a safe bet.

While Nintendo has denied the Switch 2 rumors, reputable insiders have said that some developers and publishers already have Switch 2 dev kits and are working on games for the system. If the Switch 2 is releasing in 2024 as many have speculated, it wouldn't be surprising if those reports were true, despite Nintendo's denials. A Switch 2 announcement may or may not come in 2024, but in the meantime, Nintendo is looking to have at least one more big holiday shopping season for its current console.
