With millions of people around the world self-isolating due to the coronavirus pandemic, it makes sense that many of them are turning to video games for entertainment. This increased demand for video games is causing some issues, however, as the Nintendo Switch console is selling out at retailers, with Nintendo struggling to keep up with newfound demand for the console.

Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and more retailers are running low on Nintendo Switch consoles to sell to consumers. Nintendo has not explained why this is, but there are a few factors likely playing into the situation. The previously mentioned increased demand for video games is likely playing a role, as is the recent launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which has proven to be a huge hit for Nintendo.

Something else that could be hurting the Nintendo Switch supply is how the coronavirus pandemic is impacting console shipments. It's certainly within the realm of possibility that the lack of Nintendo Switch consoles at various retailers has more to do with the coronavirus limiting supplies than it does people rushing out to buy the new console. The correct answer likely lies somewhere in the middle, with both factors playing a role in the Nintendo Switch console shortages.

This isn't the first time that a Nintendo product has been difficult to find due to the coronavirus pandemic. Ring Fit Adventure sales have also been much higher than usual because of the coronavirus, with many seemingly turning to the exercise game to stay active while stuck inside. Ring Fit Adventure was first difficult to find in China while that country was dealing with the coronavirus, but its now hard to find in the United States and other countries as well.

Unfortunately for those looking to purchase a Switch, it's unclear when Nintendo Switch consoles will be more readily available. Nintendo itself doesn't seem to have a specific timeline available. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Nintendo stated, "Nintendo Switch hardware is selling out at various retail locations in the U.S., but more systems are on the way. We apologize for any inconvenience."

Here's hoping Nintendo can get stores stocked with more Switch consoles sooner rather than later, so those stuck at home can at least entertain themselves with video games.
