Highlights

  • The Nintendo Switch has sold 141.32 million units, with a drop in sales from the previous year.
  • The console is predicted to hit 154.82 million units in the coming year, potentially surpassing the all-time sales of the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo DS.
  • Nintendo recently confirmed that its next console and successor to the Switch will be revealed before March 2025.

Nintendo recently revealed its updated sales numbers for the Switch console, not too long after the company acknowledged its eventual follow-up. Ever since hitting the market in early 2017, the Nintendo Switch has been a global sales juggernaut, bolstered by chart-topping exclusives like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and last year’s The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie has also helped sell more Nintendo Switch consoles in countries like Mexico and South America after landing in theaters in 2023.

As a result of all this, the Nintendo Switch has crossed many sales milestones and broken numerous records over the past seven years. Last February, it was announced that the Nintendo Switch surpassed the PlayStation 4 in sales, and the console would outsell the Xbox 360 later that year. This February, it was revealed that the Nintendo Switch had beaten out Nintendo’s own DS and Game Boy handhelds to become the highest-selling system of all time in Japan, even after a drop in the console’s annual global sales.

Nintendo Switch Has Sold 141.32 Million Units

Nintendo predicts that the Switch will sell around 13.50 million units in the next fiscal year, which would bring its total to roughly 154.82 million. If this is the case, then the Nintendo Switch could come close to surpassing the PlayStation 2 (155 million) as the highest-selling video game console of all time. Among Nintendo’s various systems, the Switch currently stands in second place behind the DS, beating out classic hardware like the original Game Boy and Nintendo Wii.

Just this week, Nintendo officially confirmed the long-held rumors of a new console to eventually replace the Nintendo Switch, and this system will be revealed sometime between now and next March. Only time will tell how this news will affect future sales of the current Nintendo console, but so far it looks like the Switch is on track to being one of the most financially successful video game systems of all time.
