It has been a little over three years since the initial release of the Nintendo Switch. In that time, the console has seen a great deal of success, selling tens of millions of units worldwide, easily one of the greatest and most popular consoles Nintendo has ever produced. However, as of March of 2020, the Nintendo Switch has gained yet another achievement as part of its ongoing history.

The Nintendo Switch originally launched in March of 2017, after being referred to simply as the NX for several months. Since launching in 2017, it has become one of the most popular Nintendo consoles to have ever existed, selling tens of millions of units over the course of three years. In fact, as of March of 2020, the Switch actually outsold the Nintendo Wii as the highest-selling Nintendo console in Japan.

Over the course of the past few months, Nintendo Switch sales have seen tremendous growth, largely owed to the outbreak of COVID-19. However, it was recently announced just how many systems were sold during that time frame. The overall sales during the month of March came to an impressive 4.2 million units.

Starting in April of 2019 and ending in March of 2020, the Nintendo Switch sold a little over 21 million units. These 4.2 million units alone make up twenty percent of Nintendo's annual sales of the console. It's no surprise at this point why there was a temporary shortage in Switch consoles during this period of time.

It is truly impressive how much the Nintendo Switch has succeeded since its launch in 2017. In less than a year, the Switch outsold the Wii U's lifetime sales, with its launch titles selling over tens of millions of units. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe alone sold over twenty million units. With so many new Nintendo Switch exclusive games on the horizon, the console shows absolutely no signs of slowing down and it's safe to assume that fans are incredibly excited for what's to come.

The Nintendo Switch is an eighth-generation console developed and produced by Nintendo. Since it's release back in March of 2017, the console has been met with widespread critical and commercial success, selling close to 56 million units. Thanks to the release of games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Nintendo Switch sales have appeared to only increased during that time.
