The long-rumored Nintendo Switch follow-up console could avoid the supply issues that plagued the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S during their 2020 launches. There have been countless rumors that Nintendo is planning to release its next console sooner rather than later, especially since the highly successful Switch is now nearly seven years old. Many sources claim that this new Nintendo hardware could come as early as this year, though the Big N has yet to make any sort of official announcement on the matter.

Many other details about the next Nintendo system have spread over the past year or so, giving fans a possible look at the technical horsepower this new hardware could have. Nintendo has historically valued affordability over graphics, but insider accounts from last year’s Gamescom report that the tentatively named Switch 2 could sport graphics on par with the PS5 and Xbox Series X thanks to Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology. More recently, Omdia Research Manager Hiroshi Hayase predicted that the new Nintendo console will have a larger, 8-inch LCD screen, though there might not be an OLED version until later.

Nintendo Switch 2 Listed by Retailer

The first-ever Nintendo Switch 2 retailer listing appears online, attaching a tentative release window to the upcoming console.

This wasn’t the only Nintendo Switch 2 detail shared by Hiroshi Hayase during his recent interview with Bloomberg, as noted by Bloomberg gaming writer and Twitter user Takashi Mochizuki. According to display shipment data, Nintendo will supposedly produce over 10 million units over the console’s initial year, hopefully avoiding the supply issues that made finding a PS5 or Xbox Series console so difficult for consumers in 2020.

Nintendo’s Next Console Will Be Easier To Find In Stores

These issues were brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, which made manufacturing and transporting processor chips and other essential components impossible for most of the lead-up to the ninth console generation’s launch. As a result, supplies for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S were low during the first few years, and it wouldn’t be until well into 2022 that Sony and Microsoft were finally able to begin making more consoles to meet demand.

It looks like the eventual Nintendo Switch successor will avoid these problems when it finally hits retailers, though it is still anyone’s guess when that will be. Rumors suggest that certain triple-A developers are already working on games for the still-unnamed system, and leakers claim that Nintendo could be reviving old franchises like Star Fox on its new hardware. Of course, none of this is officially confirmed, meaning the gaming world will have to wait for the next Nintendo platform to be revealed to know if any of these rumors and insider accounts are true.
