According to a new rumor, the Nintendo Switch 2 could be launching with a brand-new open world Super Mario game. Super Mario is Nintendo's flagship franchise, and so it's no surprise that the Big N has launched many of its home consoles alongside a new entry in the beloved series.

This practice has dated back to the days of the NES, which launched with the original Super Mario Bros. game. Then Super Mario World launched with the Super Nintendo, and Super Mario 64 released alongside the Nintendo 64. The GameCube and Wii were released without new Super Mario games on day one, but then New Super Mario Bros. U was released as a Wii U launch title. The Switch didn't have a Super Mario game on day one, but Super Mario Odyssey released in the same year as the home console/handheld hybrid.

This pattern makes it easy to believe that Nintendo could be preparing to release a brand-new Super Mario game for the Switch 2 console, or whatever the next-generation Nintendo system ends up being called. The leak comes from Zippo, who has accurately leaked Nintendo news in the past, but has also been incorrect about some things. In any case, they claim that the Switch 2 will be launching in 2024 with an open world Super Mario game.

Super Mario 3D World Bowser's Fury

Fans should take the information with a massive grain of salt, but Zippo's post describes this open world Super Mario game as not being a sequel to Odyssey, but rather something that goes "in an entirely different direction." It's said that the graphics are "absolutely jaw dropping" and it will be Nintendo's big game for 2024. While Zippo's information may or may not be accurate, there is reason to believe that the next 3D Super Mario game could very well be open world.

3D Super Mario games have often dabbled in large open environments, with Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury already showing what an open world 3D Super Mario game could be like. The Bowser's Fury add-on is arguably the first open world Super Mario experience, but on a relatively small scale. It's reasonable to assume Nintendo could have been using Bowser's Fury to test the waters before completely dedicating itself to an open world Super Mario experience, but fans of the franchise will have to wait for an official announcement to be sure. And it's worth stressing that fans should not get their hopes up. It's entirely possible that Zippo's information is inaccurate.

While an open world Super Mario game for the next-generation Nintendo console may or may not exist, fans have a new Super Mario experience to look forward to in the near future. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is set to launch on October 20 for the Switch, and promises to be yet another quality entry in the long-running platformer series.
