Just days after the June 21 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo has announced a collaboration between Super Mario and Oreo cookies for a limited time. As part of the collaboration, 16 Super Mario characters will be featured on Oreo cookies. On social media, reception to the crossover was favorable, as fans looked forward to grabbing a batch of their own.In 2021, Oreo announced a collaboration with the Pokemon series, which featured 16 Pokemon on select packages of Oreo cookies in markets around the globe and online. However, much to the chagrin of Pokemon fans, scalpers resold Oreo cookies for ridiculous prices online with cookies featuring Mew going as much as $1,000 each on eBay at the time. Though the Oreo cookie sensation paled compared to the value of certain Pokemon TCG cards, it remains to be seen if this Super Mario and Oreo collaboration will follow suit.RELATED: Super Mario RPG Fans Debate Whether a Final Fantasy-Themed Superboss Will Return in RemakePackages of Super Mario Oreo cookies will be sold at various retailers worldwide and online at Oreo's website starting on Monday, July 10. Preorders start at $4.99 and are limited to one package per order, according to Oreo. As part of this new crossover between Nintendo and Oreo, the Super Mario characters and items that will be featured on Oreo cookies are Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Toad, Yoshi, Goomba, Koopa Troopa, Boo, Spiny, Piranha Plant, Blooper, a Coin, Super Mushroom, Fire Flower and Super Star. For the marketing campaign for this collaboration, Bowser has once again kidnapped Princess Peach, hence her absence from being featured on any of the Oreo cookies.

On social media, Super Mario fans reacted favorably to the news. While some remained skeptical that the cookies would be scalped and resold on eBay, just like the Pokemon Oreo cookies were, other fans had some fun with the unexpected announcement. Some joked that the Oreo cookies would be the "power-up" that would turn Mario into his Elephant Mario form in the upcoming 2D platformer Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The elephant form, along with more power-ups, will be featured prominently when the next entry in the Super Mario series launches in October. At the time of writing, there is no indication when the Super Mario and Oreo crossover will end.

While Oreo has collaborated with other series such as Halo and Pokemon in the past, this will mark the first time that it has featured the Super Mario series in any of its products. Only time will tell if this collaboration will be a one-time thing or not.
