The Super Mario series may be the most recognizable and historical franchise in gaming. The plumber and his pals have starred in games for 35 years and have brought about some of the most memorable titles to generations of gamers. And thanks to that, Nintendo may be releasing a 35-year anniversary remaster of sorts, if rumors are true.

But recent rumors also point to Nintendo possibly releasing some of the less popular Super Mario titles, which to the Nintendo faithful, would in many ways be equally exciting.

While games like Super Mario World and Super Mario Galaxy are considered all-time classics, there have been a few obscure and oddball titles in the franchise. Nintendo tried its hand in the educational realm at one point. A recent rumor points to a few titles like Mario is Missing!, Mario's Time Machine, and even the Philips CD-i game Hotel Mario coming to Nintendo Switch Online. The online program has seen its fair share of odd games, but these would be the strangest yet, as they've not been released by Nintendo since the initial launch decades ago.

Apparently Nintendo may also be working on brand new titles that pull from these misfit Mario games in some sort of  New Super Mario Bros. is Missing! + Bowser's Minions HD Remix. NES Remix is a series that deserves a comeback, and maybe these games are a reimaging of that.

Perhaps Nintendo is attempting to mix things up in that they've re-released a game like Super Mario Bros. on the NES a dozen times now, and bringing some of the stranger games to fans as well is a welcome addition. For now, these are just rumors, so take them with a grain of salt. If they are true, it will be fun to play these older stranger Super Mario titles for the first time in a very long time.
