The Nintendo Mii is a customizable avatar that saw its debut in 2006 on the Wii and whose use has continued on later Nintendo consoles. The Mii’s purpose is similar to that of the Xbox’s Avatars, which first made an appearance around the same time, serving as an amusing representation of the player whose face, clothing, hair style, and facial expression can be personalized.

For many years, the Mii was fairly popular and was included in over 100 titles, including Wii Sports, Mario Party 8, and the brawler Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, giving users the opportunity to play a version of themselves in the games. Although the Mii is still in use to this day, its popularity has unquestionably decreased with time. On the Nintendo Switch, many players create their Mii when setting up the console and then never think about it again.

Nintendo is hoping to change that with the upcoming release of the Miitopia remaster, a role-playing game developed by Nintendo that will release for the Switch on May 21. The game allows players to customize a cast of Mii characters, perhaps modeling them after friends and family, who then play an active role in the story. However, Nintendo may have realized that many people don’t know or have forgotten how to create a Mii character on the Switch, and recently released a tutorial video for guidance.

The short one-minute video takes Switch users step by step through the process of creating a Mii avatar, even explaining how to find the function in the console’s System Settings menu. The tutorial demonstrates selecting the Mii’s head shape, hair, eyes, nose, mouth, and height. There are of course other options available for customizing a Mii, including gender, skin color, eyebrows, facial hair, glasses, body position, and body markings like moles.

For those who don’t feel like following along with a video, Nintendo UK has created a webpage with pictures to explain the process. The site also explains how to copy a Mii avatar from an amiibo using the Switch's right Joy-Con controller.

Miitopia, which originally released for the now-discontinued Nintendo 3DS in 2017, is an RPG with elements of life simulation. Players select from standard role-playing classes such as a warrior or mage, as well as more obscure roles like a cat or flower. Miitopia on the Switch differs from the 3DS version and offers new customization options, allowing players to choose from seven personality types — like energetic, kind, or stubborn — and add personal touches like tattoos, multicolored hair, and makeup.
