Previous rumors regarding the Switch 2's release have been somewhat scattered in recent months. Early leaks suggested Nintendo's next console would be out by the end of 2024 at the latest, but these plans were reportedly scrapped due to internal concerns over meeting the initial demand for the console. Later leaks claimed that the Switch 2 release was moved to early 2025, leaving time for Nintendo to implement additional upgrades to the console to better compete in the video game console market. Unfortunately for Switch fans hoping to get their hands on the next-gen iteration, Nintendo confirmed the successor console will have a later debut than expected. According to GamesIndustry.biz's translation of the latest Nintendo earnings Q&A, president Shunatro Furukawa confirmed the Switch 2 was not part of its forecast for its current fiscal year, which is scheduled to end on March 31, 2025. This means the next Switch will likely not be released until April 2025 at the earliest.

Furukawa Discusses Nintendo Switch Successor

Fortunately for fans, Furukawa revealed some good news regarding plans for the eventual rollout of Nintendo's next console. Most notably, the company predicted the supply chain for the Switch 2 will not encounter any semiconductor shortages, which were previously a recurring problem for its competitors, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Additionally, the Switch 2 will feature the same Nintendo Account system as the original console, though Furukawa clarified that the company still planned to manufacture physical cartridges on top of digital video game sales.

Switch users can also take heart in knowing more news regarding the Switch's successor will be announced in the coming months. Furukawa himself previously confirmed that new details regarding the Switch 2 would be revealed before the end of the fiscal year, though the Nintendo president also warned fans not to expect any major updates during the planned Nintendo Direct event for June.

The Switch has been the flagship Nintendo console for seven years now and it's safe to say that it has served both the company and its users well throughout its lifetime. Longtime fans can only hope its successor will provide a platform for just as many amazing games as the original Switch.
