A fan of Nintendo's Donkey Kong has put out an idea for a new LEGO set themed after the character's arcade roots. Despite it being nearly ten years since its last mainline game, the Donkey Kong series and its characters remain popular with Nintendo fans.

Nintendo first made waves in the LEGO space when it collaborated with the toy company to bring Mario to life through a series of LEGO sets in 2020. This line has since expanded to include multiple LEGO expansions, other Mario characters like Luigi and Peach, and large-scale sets like the Mighty Bowser LEGO set and Super Mario 64 set. Many have since speculated on when Nintendo will make more of its properties into LEGO sets with some popular candidates being heavy-hitting franchises like The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Kirby.

When it came to devising ideas for more LEGO sets, one fan pulled from the less prominent Nintendo series Donkey Kong which got its start in 1981 through the simply titled arcade classic Donkey Kong. This LEGO set, designed by Reddit user LegoIdeasRetroArcade, faithfully recreates the game's first level and features a large Donkey Kong throwing barrels down ramps while a frightened Pauline stands nearby. Both Pauline and Donkey Kong have appeared in numerous Mario spin-off games, and Donkey Kong will appear in The Super Mario Bros. Movie as a principal character. For the full image, click here.

LegoIdeasRetroArcade shared their creation across various subreddits and asked for others to voice their support for the idea on the LEGO Ideas website in which users can submit ideas for future LEGO sets. If a proposed set can reach 10,000 supporters within a certain time frame, the idea will officially go under consideration and could end up becoming an actual set. The Donkey Kong set currently sits at just under 4,800 supporters with 396 days left in its campaign. LEGO Ideas was the same website used to get a LEGO set based on the Temple of Time from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild under consideration earlier this year.

Nintendo's collaboration with LEGO has proven successful thus far and shows that fans are hungry for more. Recent copyright strikes regarding Zelda LEGO sets suggest that fans could be getting something in this vein sometime soon. Furthermore, the current set's success illustrates that Nintendo and LEGO are in a great position to appeal to fans of all ages by offering something like the Donkey Kong set that could capture the nostalgia of older fans. Nintendo has never been afraid to lean into nostalgia, and it will hopefully not forget to do so as it continues its collaboration with LEGO.
