Nintendo Switch Online is getting support for the Nintendo 64, and surprisingly, also the Sega Genesis. Along with these games, Nintendo is producing special Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis Switch controllers to play these classic games with.

Nintendo Switch Online has received a mixed reception since its inception shortly after the Switch's launch. As nice as it is to have numerous NES and SNES titles bundled in with the online membership, the service was Nintendo's substitution for the Virtual Console. Fans believed that if Nintendo was not going to make its Nintendo 64, Gameboy, and Nintendo DS games no longer accessible through the shop, then the least it could do is make more available to play through Nintendo Switch Online. Well, it looks like fans' voices were somewhat heard, as Nintendo is bringing Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games to Nintendo Switch Online.

To coincide with Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games becoming available through Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo announced Switch versions of those classic consoles' controllers will also be available for purchase. These controllers function similarly to the Nintendo Switch Online NES and SNES controllers, looking identical to the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis controllers of the 90s, but with the capabilities of a modern controller. Unlike the originals, these controllers are wireless, and can potentially be used to play titles from other consoles, if one is so adventurous, as they will likely be registered as Pro controllers.

Interestingly, it looks like these controllers will be distributed by Nintendo exclusively. While showing off the controllers during the Direct, the statement "Available for Nintendo Switch Online Members" appears across the top of the screen. Text at the bottom of the screen elaborates that "any paid Nintendo Switch Online membership required to purchase controllers." It is currently unknown when these controllers will be launching, but each is priced at $49.99.

This is definitely a cool offering by Nintendo to complete that retro experience while playing its retro games. What is perhaps the craziest part is that 30 years after the Sega Genesis and SNES were battling it out in the early 90s, Sega Genesis games are being offered through a Nintendo subscription and a genuine Nintendo-based Genesis controller will be available for purchase. Maybe, Sega beat Nintendo in the console wars since Nintendo is now making products from Sega's history.

The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack is coming soon.
