Crafting is at the heart of the Victorian-gaslight fantasy world of Nightingale, as your survival will depend on not only your ability to hold your own in combat in the wild, but building the right shelters and tools you need to survive the harsh challenges that the Faewilds have to offer. From the beginning of the game, you will be tasked with ensuring you can overcome more than just the wildlife, but also the merciless elements that threaten to bring your journey to an abrupt end.

As you begin your Nightingale journey, you will find yourself spending a lot of early game-time on the collection of various resources, from plants and trees to meat and animal products. All of these serve important and distinct purposes that range from keeping your character fed to ensuring they have the best quality tools, clothes, and weapons at hand. Of those important products in Leather, which is essential for some early game upgrades in particular, so players should make themselves aware of how to find leather in Nightingale.

How to Find Hide In Nightingale

A Nightingale player acquiring Hide

As is the case when players wish to craft Straps to improve the quality of their tools, making Leather in Nightingale requires that you first get your hands on the raw material needed to create it - Animal Hide. Hide is relatively plentiful in supply in most of the game's biomes, particularly in the Forest and Swamp, but can be a bit tricky at first to grab, given your target is a live animal. With that said, there is more than one way to obtain the resource, namely these two main methods;

  • Hunt an animal, either prey or predator, and harvest the Hide using a Hunting Knife.
  • Purchase Hide from an Essence Trader.

In the early stages of the game, Hide can be relatively easy to acquire if you find animals with slower movement speed. You may struggle with agile beasts like deer, but wolves and hogs will be more accessible as they are not as evasive and will generally fight back. If you are going to engage in combat with the animals, ensure your tools are completely repaired or risk having to fight them using only your fists. If you'd rather not get your hands dirty, most Essence Traders will have Hide in good supply for a reasonable price, so there is a less violent alternative, particularly if you're struggling to find wildlife to hunt.

How to Make Leather In Nightingale

A player crafting Leather in Nightingale

Once you have some Animal Hide in your inventory, crafting Leather becomes a relatively straight-forward procedure, provided you have already built the necessary crafting station. To make Leather, you will need to build a Simple Tanning Station, which requires only 10 Plant Fiber and 6 Sticks. These items are very easy to come by, even as a solo player, as you can pick them up directly from small trees and plants, respectively, without the need to use any tools. They are relatively lightweight as well, making it easy to carry great quantities.

After you have acquired the necessary materials and built a Simple Tanning Station, you will simply need to approach the station and complete the following steps to make Leather;

  • Select Leather from the Crafting Menu.
  • Select the Hide you wish to use, or press F to autofill the slot.
  • Click on Craft or press R on your keyboard to begin crafting.

Leather takes a little longer to make, with a craft time of 50 seconds, but is an invaluable resource for those looking to make some better-quality clothing to protect your player from the elements and dangers that threaten your safety in Nightingale.
