NieR: Automata has officially launched in Japan, and fans have discovered a fairly lewd trophy lurking in the game's achievements. The trophy, called "What Are You Doing?", apparently unlocks after maneuvering the camera to show the player Android 2B's butt underneath her skirt. The player has to do this ten different times to unlock the trophy, so it's not one that gamers are likely to obtain without deliberately being inappropriate.

While the trophy is a nod to the controversy that emerged over the...heavily detailed representation of 2B's posterior that gamers found in NieR: Automata's demo, it's interesting that Square Enix and Platinum Games have decided to embrace that moment rather than simply edit it out of the final product altogether. For what it's worth, the development team gave 2B a much fuller coverage underneath the skirt, likely to hedge against any negative stigma emerging out of a game that has suddenly become a sleeper contender for one of the best RPGs of the year.

NieR: Automata hasn't released in North America or Europe yet, but the very earliest indication from Japan is that the game is living up to its hype. That's being achieved, as evidenced by the existence of the "What Are You Doing?" trophy, without sacrificing NieR's oddball charm and refusal to sacrifice any of the artistic direction of its director, Yoko Taro. Of course, that hasn't meant not making any innovations to the series - NieR: Automata's combat has been a heavily praised improvement on its predecessor's, and the game is now taking cues from other successful titles like Dark Souls.

With yet another reference to Android 2B's posterior, NieR: Automata also joins other titles like Overwatch and Street Fighter 5 in infamy, as each of those titles survived a butt-related scandal as well. Overwatch's Tracer saw her victory poses remodeled after fans complained, while Street Fighter 5 had to delete R. Mika's infamous butt slap altogether in the wake of yet more backlash related to female representation in video games.

NieR: Automata releases in North America and Europe on March 7 and March 10 respectively for PS4. A PC version of the game will release at a later date.
