Similar to other RPGs, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch does have a lot of exploration components, especially when it comes to unlockables scattered throughout the overworld. As players help protagonist Oliver save his mother from an illness, he and his friends would encounter various Treasure Chests in this Ni no Kuni game, some of which he can open on his own while others need some special supervision.

One such type of Treasure Chest are Blue Chests, which aren’t as easy to open as they seem. Thankfully, there are ways players can use in order to fully open Blue Chests whenever they encounter them, especially for the purposes of acquiring sweet loot.

What Are Chests?

Encountering a Chest

Before players proceed with their tasks of opening Blue Chests, it’s important to learn about their common denominator - Chests. In the Ni no Kuni game, Chests or Treasure Chests are located all over the world. As with other chests similar to other RPGs, these Treasure Chests contain item such as currencies, weapons and armor, treats, and other provisions that may prove useful to the player’s journey.

What’s interesting there is that Wrath of the White Witch actually has various colored Treasure Chests, each with their special characteristics and preferred way of opening.

What Other Colored Chests Are There?

For a quick run through, outside Blue Chests, here are the other Chests that players may be able to encounter in the game. It’s important to note that they are located sporadically across the map, and have no specific zones:

  • Red Chests: The standard Treasure Chests, players can easily find them using the Seek Fortune Spell. They can be opened at any time.
  • Green Chests: These are magically-locked Treasure Chests that are only accessible through Swaine’s lockgun. Opening this would require Swaine positioning himself to fire the lockgun in front of the Chest. They are often found in interior areas and dungeons.
  • Purple Chests: These are rare Treasure Chests that players are only able to open through the Spring Lock Spell. However, players can only access these Chests in the first place after unlocking the Miasma Marshes.

What’s The Deal With Blue Chests?

A Blue Chest

Similar to other colored Treasure Chests, Blue Chests are a colored variant of Treasure Chests players can find across the overworld in Wrath of the White Witch. Compared to other Chest categories, however, Blue Chests are along the middle ground between “standard” and “extremely rare” Chests, making them and the items they obtain rather middling in the context of value.

This doesn’t mean they don’t contain valuable things, however, as Blue Chests are ideal sources of equipment and other useful items throughout the early game and the midgame portion of the experience.

How To Find Blue Chests?

Opening a Blue Chest

Before players can open Blue Chests, they need to be able to locate them first. To do this, they need access to what’s called the Chart Chests Spell. This is an everyday spell that gives players access to the locations of nearby Treasure Chests in interior locations, such as dungeons and rooms. In turn, players need to scour dungeons and cities in order for Chart Chests to be able to find Treasure Chests in the map.

Players can unlock the Chart Chests Spell throughout their journey solving Horace’s riddles, the questline of which begins as far back as in Ding Dong Dell. They can unlock Chart Chests in particular after solving Horace’s riddle in Hamelin. After casting the Spell, players only have a minute to remember where the Treasrue Chests were marked.

How To Open The Blue Chests?

Opening another Blue Chest

In order for players to open Blue Chests, they need a spell called Spring Lock. This is something players can acquire after helping King Tom get cured of a broken heart, which is one of the major questlines in the game.

When using this Spell, players will now be able to open not just doors but also Treasure Chests. Players who acquire this Spell for the first time will be able to open Blue Chests and, after attaining more powerful wands, may be able to open Purple Chests.

How To Use The Spring Lock Spell?

The Spring Lock Spell

Unlike other RPGs with a magic system, the spells in Wrath of the White Witch actually require players to open the Spell Menu from time to time. This means players need to open the game menu, select the spell they plan on using, and deploy it manually akin to a wizard using a spellbook. While most combat spells don’t need this mechanic, a lot of the more mundane spells like Spring Lock do.

In turn, players might find themselves unable to open Blue Chests automatically simply because they’re not using Spring Lock properly. To do this the right way, players need to stand beside the Blue Chest and use the Spring Lock from the Spell Menu. Only then will the spell prompt th Blue Chest to open and reveal its contents.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch was released for the Xbox One and Series X/S last September 15, 2022. The game is also available for the Switch, PS3, PS4, and the PC.
