Looking to replicate the look and feel of retro Pokemon games, this year's Nexomon: Extinction is shaping up to be something really special, with the upcoming title featuring a cast of colorful creatures and invigorating battles. In the lead up to its August 28 release date, PQube and Vewo Interactive have elected to unveil some new videos documenting how some of the game's most important mechanics will work, with its most recent showcase highlighting how players recruit new Nexomon to their team.
While many would expect the game to replicate Pokemon's tried and tested catching mechanic, Nexomon: Extinction's take on the system includes a few more important steps. The video itself shows the protagonist running through long grass, encountering a plant Nexomon known as Potpot. The player unleashes their own Nexomon, Lume, as the two hurl attacks at each other.
With the Potpot weakened, the player then feeds the rival creature a specific type of food, which will seemingly be based around the type of Nexomon that the player is targeting. It's clear the selected item works as the Potpot reacts well to the food, leading the protagonist to finally attempt to capture their target. Pulling up the menu, they select "Nexotrap," which appears to be Nexomon: Extinction's version of the Pokeball. Unlike Pokemon, the trap pulls up a series of stats showing how likely it is that the player will catch the Potpot, factoring in how weak it is, whether it has been fed, and what status effects are currently afflicting it.
The player can then opt to catch their opponent, however, their input into the Nexomon's capture isn't done quite yet. Throwing out the trap, the player must then enter a series of button prompts in a short time limit. If they succeed, the target joins their team. If they fail, then they'll have to repeat the process again. Overall, it seems like a decent expansion of Pokemon's system that makes it clearer whether or not the player's capture attempt will be successful.
For those out of the loop on Nexomon: Extinction, the game looks to be an exciting new entry in the monster-battling genre that takes a lot of influence from past Pokemon games. Better yet, it'll be available on a much wider variety of consoles than its colossal Nintendo counterpart, with the title coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam alongside its Nintendo Switch release. While there's been a lot of games that source Pokemon as their core inspiration, Nexomon: Extinction definitely looks like one of the more promising ones.
