Want to play but unsure how to? Below are all the rules for getting through your first game of the New York Times Games Strands.

  • In the puzzle, there are seven or eight hidden words. Each word will either fit into the category or will be the category.
  • Categories can be one word, as in "fruit" or two words, as in "cardinal sins." They will be the only word that shows up in yellow when drawn.
  • Letters must be vertically, horizontally, or diagonally connected.
  • You cannot reuse letters in the whole puzzle. All letters must be used.
  • You can draw words that don't fit the puzzle's theme to try to get points toward filling up your hint meter.
  • You have unlimited guesses to get to the final answer.
