The Star Wars Skywalker Saga may have just come to the end, but that doesn't mean the franchise is. There may be a bit of hiatus before the next movie launches, but a new director has been confirmed for a new Star Wars movie.

Taikia Waititi, perhaps best known for Thor: Ragnarok and the season finale episode of The Mandalorian, has been tapped to direct and co-write a new Star Wars film, set for theatrical release. Now, whether this is a brand new trilogy set in the High Republic, a spin-off like Rogue One, or whatnot remains unconfirmed.

Waititi will work on the screenplay alongside Krysty Wilson-Cairns, a BAFTA Award winner for Outstanding British Film of the Year for her work on 1917. In addition to this announcement, it was also revealed that Bachelorette and Russian Doll's Leslye Headland is working on a new Star Wars series for Disney Plus, which she will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for.

Without a doubt, May the 4th is the perfect day to announce these projects, but they do beg a big question: what about Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy and Kevin Feige's Star Wars film, or will these go the way of the Game of Thrones directors' Star Wars films as well? Only time will tell what's officially coming down the content pipeline.

A new Star Wars movie is in development.
