Sony has officially announced two new PlayStation 5 console models. Rumors have been swirling for quite some time that Sony was preparing to release new PS5 consoles with slimmer designs. Additional rumors claimed that Sony would be releasing a detachable disc drive that would give PS5 Digital Edition owners the chance to upgrade their systems to accept discs.

Rumors and leaks about the new PS5 console models have been persistent since they first cropped up, and now they've been proven accurate. The new PS5 console models are slimmer than their currently-available counterparts, with their volume reduced by 30%, and weight by 18% and 24%. The rumored PS5 detachable disc drive is confirmed as well, and it will release at some point later on for $79.99.

When Are the New PS5 Models Coming Out?

  • November 2023
  • Price: $499 for Disc Edition, $450 for Digital Edition

These new PS5 console models are functionally identical to the ones that are available now, except for the detachable disc drive that will be made available for the PS5 Digital Edition. This isn't a mid-gen upgrade like a PS5 Pro, though rumors suggest that such a product is also in the works. Considering this, some consumers may want to wait and see if the rumors of a PS5 Pro console are true before buying one of these new PS5 models.

The new PS5 models are coming at an opportune time for the PlayStation brand. Sony is set to launch its big Spider-Man 2 PS5 exclusive game very soon, and that will no doubt be a system-seller this holiday season. While some shoppers may opt for the Spider-Man 2 PS5 bundle, others may prefer the slimmer PS5 consoles and decide to pick those up instead along with a separate copy of Spider-Man 2. Whatever the case may be, the era of the slimmer PS5 is nearly upon us.
