The Princess Diaries 3 is now its writing stages. According to new reports, Disney has started work on the film, which will not be a reboot, but will be in continuity with the first two films in the franchise. The Princess Diaries is a franchise based on the novels of the same name by Meg Cabot. Before she was Catwoman, Anne Hathaway starred as Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, or Mia for short, a teenage girl who is shocked to discover she is actually the heir to the throne of the small European nation of Genovia.

Also starring in the 2001 film and its 2004 sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement was Julie Andrews, who portrayed Mia's grandmother Clarisse Renaldi, the ruling Queen Regent of the country. The series centers on Mia's trials and struggles morphing from a typical American teenage girl into the image of royalty; her relationship with her grandmother is also a central aspects of the film.

According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, the script for a third film is currently being written by Aadrita Mukerji, a writer known for her work on Supergirl, Scorpion, Reacher and Quantum Leap. Anne Hathaway is not yet slated to return, but The Hollywood Reporter does state that the studio has high hopes for her return, and that Hathaway has expressed interest in returning to the role in the past. Though Garry Marshall, who directed the first two films, has since passed away, but Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two films, is returning. Also joining the crew is Melissa Stack as an executive producer.

Hopefully Anne Hathaway returns to the franchise that featured her stunning transformation into a movie star. Though she has won an Oscar in the years since the last film's release, the film remains a fixture of pop culture, and both Hathaway and Andrews have spoken warmly about it in interviews. And though Andrews, who is currently 87 years old, has shifted to taking voice roles in recent years, hopefully she can make an appearance as well. Part of what made the original films so special was seeing Hathaway and Andrews play off one another - Andrews as the prim and proper picture of royalty, Hathaway as her clumsy and well-intentioned, sometimes radical granddaughter.

The series also features a number of notable actors in early roles who may appear if a sequel is made. For instance, Chris Pine starred in The Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement as Mia's love interest. Though the two decide to take it slow at the end of the film, perhaps he ended up as her Prince Consort. The films also included Heather Matarazzo (recently seen in Scream 5) as Mia's best friend Lily Moscovitz, and featured Hector Elizondo as Mia's bodyguard Joe (and romantic interest of Clarisse).
