Summer is approaching and with it a season of major video game announcements. 2020, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, is going to be a bigger year than most. The next generation of consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Series X, arrive this holiday. Teasers for new games are already being shared online, with today being no different. Sunday morning saw a tease for a new Mafia project, of all things.

The Mafia franchise has been absent since 2016 when Mafia 3 was launched. It would be the only Mafia game released this generation, which is in line with the original Mafia and its sequel. Now Mafia may be back in some form or another, as the official Mafia Twitter account has once again become active. A single tweet was posted Sunday morning with a single word. "Family," is the lone tweet, which has now been pinned at the top of the account's feed.

This is the first post made to the official Mafia Twitter account since August 2018. That should make clear that this account was entirely inactive up to now. It also implies that the account being brought back to life signifies something big. Something Mafia this way comes.

Expectations should absolutely be managed at this point, however. There's no further evidence of a game announcement or any upcoming reveals or teasers at this moment. That means that whatever the account has reactivated for could range from a brand new Mafia game to the release of a soundtrack or Mafia 3 coming to Xbox Game Pass.

One recent rumor worth taking into consideration is that in August Take-Two registered three trademarks. The registrations could simply be Take-Two refreshing existing trademarks. However, some speculated that they could hint at several remaster projects, including for both the original Mafia and its sequel. A brand new Mafia game being in development was also considered. This past month, both Mafia 2 and Mafia 3 Remastered received ratings from the Korean rating board for games, too.

For now, there's no official announcement that a new Mafia project is in the works. But the mounting evidence that Mafia is coming back, either via remasters or a new game, is increasingly persuasive. Mafia fans should definitely be keeping an eye on the series' official Twitter account going forward.
