In just a few days, Godzilla vs. Kong will be arriving in theaters and on HBO Max, allowing fans to witness an epic showdown between the two mighty monsters. But, for the past few weeks, a rumor had been going around about a surprise character also making an appearance, and the latest trailer of the film ends all conversations by offering the first look at Mechagodzilla.

In the run-up to Godzilla vs. Kong, images of a toy Mechagodzilla went viral, potentially spoiling the film’s biggest secret. However, before the trailer even released, director Adam Wingard embraced the leak and confirmed it was true, by sharing a picture of himself holding the toy. The trailer further verifies the information and shows clips of the live-action version of the robot.

The trailer offers a few new clips from the much-awaited film, but most of the minute-and-a-half-long release shows glimpses of Kong fighting Godzilla, which had previously been revealed in the official trailer. However, the last few seconds of the trailer are what many would refer to as the money shot, when Mechagodzilla makes an appearance. The man-made monster is seen inside some kind of underground containment area. A closeup shot of its red eyes and robotic body seem to hint that it is getting ready for battle.

Mechagodzilla made its first appearance in the 1974 film, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. The mecha character goes up against its known foe Godzilla in the movie, but the latter tears off its head, literally. So far, there have been four versions of Mechagodzilla in the franchise, each being defeated by Godzilla when the two go to battle. It remains to be seen who will win if the two go up against each other in Godzilla vs. Kong and whether Kong will be joining in on the fight.

All the Mechagodzilla versions varied slightly in appearance, but the villainous characters all had traits that were similar to Godzilla’s. The first three incarnations were almost the same height and had similar dorsal fins, though smaller than Godzilla’s. The fourth version, though, was the only one with a full-length movable tail, with its body covered in large spikes. While the clips from the trailer confirm that the latest version of Mechagodzilla will also have the traditional dorsal fins, the film’s release will confirm if the mecha character is exactly like its monster counterpart.

Godzilla vs. Kong releases in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31, 2021.
