Highlights

  • Ubisoft Toronto is working on a new Far Cry game, as indicated by recent job listings, suggesting the series is not finished yet.
  • The upcoming game is likely in its early stages of development, as many of the advertised roles are for department leads and directors.
  • It may be a while before the new Far Cry game is officially revealed, considering the lengthy development cycles of previous entries in the series and the studio's other ongoing projects.

A new Far Cry game is in the works, as revealed by over a dozen new job listings published by Ubisoft Toronto. The Canadian studio completed five games in its 12-year history, including Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist and the last two Far Cry titles.

Ubisoft put out seven Far Cry games since 2012, although the series seemingly started losing some steam in recent years. This trend was underlined by the fact that Far Cry 6 was the most poorly-reviewed mainline entry in the franchise. Whether because it wanted to reboot the series in response to its dwindling renown or some other reason, the gaming giant finally decided to provide the franchise with some breathing room following the release of Far Cry 6.

Nevertheless, Ubisoft Toronto now appears to be setting its sights on a new installment in the series, having just started advertising 15 openings related to an unannounced Far Cry project. While it's possible that the upcoming game isn't a mainline entry, Ubisoft's Far Cry spin-offs have historically been handled by the company's Montreal studio, whereas the Toronto branch was in charge of the numbered installments since Far Cry 5.

The contents of the recently surfaced job listings don't reveal anything of substance about the game itself, although they do suggest that the title still isn't in active development. That's largely because more than half of the relevant roles that Ubisoft is currently advertising detail openings for department leads and directors, indicating that the project is still in its infancy. This is consistent with a March 2023 leak claiming Far Cry 7 hasn't yet started development.

Ubisoft Toronto presently numbers over 520 employees, according to public LinkedIn data. However, the current size of the studio's Far Cry team is unclear. Some developers who worked on Far Cry 6 were plausibly moved to the Splinter Cell remake that's also in the making at Ubisoft Toronto. Given that state of affairs, it's unlikely that this mysterious Far Cry project will be treated to an official reveal anytime soon.

For context, Far Cry 6 started pre-production circa 2016, two years before Far Cry 5 even released. The game was eventually announced in July 2020 before hitting the market 15 months later. Although Ubisoft Toronto also started another project ahead of Far Cry 6's debut, that game ended up being the aforementioned Splinter Cell remake. AAA development cycles have also been getting noticeably longer over the last decade, making it even more unlikely that Far Cry 7 will see the light of day any time soon.

A new Far Cry game is believed to be in development.
