The first trailer for the eagerly awaited reboot of sci-fi epic Dune is finally out! Preceded by host Stephen Colbert talking with director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) and members of the cast, the trailer is the first look at the new adaptation of Frank Helbert's novel series.

Starring Call Me By Your Name actor Timothée Chalamet in the role of Paul Atreides, Villeneuve's Dune is the first half of a planned two-part adaptation of the classic 1965 novel. The ensemble cast also includes Josh Brolin (Deadpool 2), Rebecca Ferguson (Doctor Sleep), Oscar Isaac (The Force Awakens), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Jason Mamoa (Game of Thrones) and Stellan Skarsgård (The Avengers).

Frank Herbet's Dune has had a long and storied history of adaptations that have and haven't made it to the screen. In 1974, Chilean-French director Alejandro Jodorowsky planned a 10 hour long adaptation starring artist Salvador Dali and Orson Welles which became the subject of its own 2013 feature length documentary, Jodorowsky's Dune.

But the first and so far best known adaptation to make it to screen was released in 1985 directed by Twin Peaks co-creator and renowned surrealist David Lynch. Though Frank Herbert was pleased with the final film, it was a critical and commercial bomb with reviews calling it incomprehensible. To be fair, upon its release, audiences were given a vocab sheet as they were entering the theater to help them make sense of the story's terminology.

Villeneuve's take on Dune comes 20 years after SyFy's miniseries adaptation and while it's yet to be seen how faithful it is to the original novel, it looks as visually spectacular as one would expect from the director of Arrival and his other take on a sci-fi classic, Blade Runner 2049. With a fresh look that owes a fair debt to David Lynch's film, this could be the defining adaptation of a beloved classic.

Dune is scheduled released in cinemas on Dec 16th.
