Highlights

  • Xbox users may finally see a cult classic JRPG return at the upcoming showcase.
  • Microsoft has historically lacked exclusive JRPGs, but Xbox 360 had hidden gems like Blue Dragon.
  • Exciting rumors suggest a possible return of Blue Dragon at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2024.

Hints from several notable insiders suggest that cult classic Xbox360-exclusive JRPG Blue Dragon could be making a comeback at Microsoft's June Xbox showcase. Xbox users who have waited years for Microsoft to invest more in publishing Japanese games might finally have their dreams come true sooner rather than later, if these rumors are to be believed.

Throughout the more-than-20-year existence of the brand, Xbox hasn't exactly been known for having exclusive JRPGs in the same way that PlayStation and Nintendo consoles have. On the contrary, many flagship JRPG franchises like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Persona have typically skipped Microsoft's line of consoles in the past, in large part because Xbox sales in Japan have historically been slow. Despite the stigma surrounding Xbox consoles and JRPGs, the Xbox 360 had a surprisingly sizable library of exclusive Japanese games. Though the large majority of them have been forgotten over the years, there were a couple of standouts that have achieved cult-classic status. Fans reminiscing on those titles might have reason to be excited as, apparently, one of these notable Xbox-exclusive JRPGs might make a return in the near future.

New Xbox Background Pays Tribute to Akira Toriyama and a Classic 360 JRPG

Xbox honors the late Akira Toriyama by releasing a dynamic dashboard background based off of his work on a classic Xbox 360 game.

Several credible Microsoft insiders have hinted at the possibility of the well-received Xbox 360 JRPGBlue Dragon making an appearance of some sort at the upcoming 2024 Xbox Games Showcase. XboxEra's Shpeshal_Nick was the first to report on this in a recent tweet of his, with him stating that, if what he heard is true, "fans of Xbox 360 era JRPGs will have something to look forward to at the [Xbox] showcase." According to users on r/GamingLeaksAndRumors, fellow insider NateTheHate reportedly replied to Shpeshal_Nick's tweet with a GIF of Blue Dragon, though this response no longer exists at the time of writing this article.

To further corroborate these claims, Jez Corden of Windows Central made a tease of his own regarding Blue Dragon in his recent article on what to expect from the Xbox showcase on June 9. In it, Corden claimed that he'd "heard about some nostalgic announcements that should chase away the blues for classic Xbox 360 RPG fans." The use of the word "blues" seems to hint at the announcement in question pertaining to Blue Dragon in some shape or form. Unfortunately, though, none of these insiders have provided any clarification as to what this potential announcement could be. Perhaps Microsoft will announce a sequel to Blue Dragon in collaboration with the original developer Mistwalker, or maybe the game is getting a remaster/remake treatment.

Exciting Times Could Be Ahead for Fans of Blue Dragon on Xbox 360

Though it's rather unlikely, it's also possible that the rumored announcement Shpeshal_Nick was referring to has nothing to do with Blue Dragon and is instead related to other great Xbox JRPGs, like Lost Odyssey or Infinite Undiscovery. Regardless of what it may be, it seems like exciting times could be ahead for fans of the Xbox ecosystem who enjoy Japanese role-playing games.
