Highlights

  • There is currently no concrete evidence to suggest that NetherRealm will be developing a Marvel fighting game, despite rumors.
  • NetherRealm has experience with superhero titles, such as Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe and the Injustice franchise.
  • If NetherRealm was to create a Marvel game, the inclusion of Green Goblin as a playable character would be intriguing, with the potential for unique gameplay and various character design possibilities.

Rumors of a Marvel fighting game from NetherRealm are not any more real than they were when they started. There’s truly nothing concrete for fans to mull over in terms of what to suspect from NetherRealm outside the assured continuation of Mortal Kombat following Mortal Kombat 1, anyhow, aside from Ed Boon’s mild teases. Therefore, it’s unlikely an NRS Marvel game would ever come to fruition, even if NRS has already proven itself to be the perfect studio to take on such a challenge.

NetherRealm is no stranger to superhero-related titles, with Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe and the Injustice franchise lending to the developer’s love of comic book media.

Still, an NRS Marvel game would be exciting for myriad reasons, such as which characters NetherRealm would select. It might seem obvious that NetherRealm would choose Spider-Man as its resident Scorpion, for example, but many villains would make for excellent fighters, as well as Kameos. If NetherRealm was working on a Marvel game and managed to have it out before Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, it could potentially beat Insomniac to the punch of introducing its own Green Goblin.

Marvel's Spider-Man Continues to Tease Green Goblin

Marvel’s Spider-Man has alluded to Green Goblin appearing at some point since the beginning of the franchise, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 only perpetuates that tease. Explicit blueprints for hand grenades, a combat helmet, and a glider were manufactured by Oscorp, as found by MJ, and while it’s still unclear whether Harry or Norman will take the mantle Norman is now pushing forward with an unsubtly named G-Serum.

It would seem as if Insomniac plans to have Green Goblin lead its ‘final chapter’ as a main antagonist, culminating in a long-term, overarching narrative. Plus, despite the obvious armor that a Goblin would have already manufactured, it’s also unclear if Insomniac would choose to have its Green Goblin be wrapped in tech, a medieval elf aesthetic, or be a hulking monster. Either way, it’ll be quite a while now before fans get to see Insomniac’s inevitable interpretation.

How Green Goblin Could Play in an NRS Marvel Game

If NetherRealm was to put out a Marvel game in that time, it would be incredible to see how Green Goblin would play in a fighting game. Of course, Goblin would have a lot of aerial mobility on his glider, meaning that a character design like Blue Beetle from Injustice 2 or Nitara from Mortal Kombat 1 could complement him well.

Goblin would also be quite a zoner, capable of lobbing pumpkin bombs and razor bats at opponents. Goblin’s attacks wouldn’t necessarily be emergent in fighting games, but the character himself is fairly unique in his design and the rarity of his appearance in games could make him a popular choice, especially as an added adversary of Spider-Man.

Then, NetherRealm could potentially give Goblin skins that give him an orange Hobgoblin aesthetic. The possibilities could be endless with such a character, and beating Insomniac to its own take would also help make it an intriguing incarnation before Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 might unveil its own.
