Nintendo dominated console sales in June, but it wasn't the buzzed-about Switch that overtook the PS4's reign, it was the NES Classic. The miniature version of the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System was June 2018's best-selling console in terms of numbers sold, even edging out its own modern counterpart, the Nintendo Switch.

Retail analyst NPD Group released the slightly delayed industry report for the period between June 3 and July 7, which tracks hardware and software numbers by both unit and and dollar sales. Unsurprisingly, at $400 compared to the NES Classic's $60, Sony's PlayStation 4 held its position at the top of dollar sales. However, the NES Classic sold more units than any other console for the month. This marks a first for the NES Classic as well as for any NES hardware since NPD began tracking video games in 1988, three years after the Nintendo Entertainment System's original North American release.

When the NES Classic first released in November 2016, finding one in a store was a rare sight due to Nintendo's miscalculation of demand. When Nintendo discontinued the miniature console a few months later, options were narrowed to eBay and Amazon, where scalpers were demanding prices upwards of $1,000 for a single unit. Perhaps due to the ensuing uproar, Nintendo announced plans to bring back the NES Classic for 2018. Its long-awaited return in June could explain the dominating sales numbers.

Depending on the location, it may be a challenge finding a store with the NES Classic in stock, but it isn't impossible. Nintendo hasn't yet announced plans to stop making the best-selling console, and reports of its availability at various outlets pop up sporadically.
