Most players that get through Neon White aren't going to be aware of a secret ending. The game is not one that involves controllable decisions or even many RPG elements. Yet there is one choice in the entire game. The issue is that most players won't ever get to make it.
This whole article must be prefaced with an obvious spoiler warning to anybody who has not yet completed Neon White and would like to experience the different endings for themselves. The first section will detail how to get the good ending, so that is safe to read, but skip the second headline as it discusses the details and differences between the two possible outcomes.
Max Out Everyone's Insight
- Do not start mission twelve until completing the following steps.
- Find every gift.
- Turn in every gift.
- Finish all of the sidequests.
To max out every character's insights, players will have to locate every gift in the game. Technically, all that must be unlocked is everyone's memories, but the last stage in each insight meter is always a memory, so there aren't any missed gifts permitted.
For Green's memories, this means chucking all of the strange coins into the ocean. In addition to the gifts, the insight missions must also be completed in their entirety. The times on these are irrelevant, but they must all be beaten.
Double Checking To Be Sure
For those who are hesitant to replay every mission, given how long the game is, go to White's Room and check his journal. In it, the insight rank for each companion is measured. If it says 'max' on the meter, then that character is ready. When they are all ready, go ahead and start the final mission.
Choosing The Book Of Life
While the Book of Death ending is not "bad" necessarily, it certainly has a lot to be desired. Loose ends abound. In this ending, Green will be condemned to hell by White's hand, a fate worse than any of White's weapons can dish out. White will then go unconscious and then he's shown to be peacefully napping (perhaps for eternity).
By writing Green's Name in the Book of Life, Green is forgiven and goes to heaven. Based on Green's choices, some may argue that's not the ending they want, but life is better for White and company as well. White will recall the happy times in life during a bonus scene after the credits.
Neon White is available now for PC and Nintendo Switch.
