2K and Visual Concepts have announced that NBA 2K24 will be adding a major feature that players have wanting for years. NBA 2K24 will be the first game in the franchise to feature cross-play, the ability to play multiplayer with players on separate platforms -- though there's a major catch. After waiting so long for NBA 2K24 to add crossplay, it's perhaps unsurprising that 2K and Visual Concepts aren't fully implementing it. Crossplay in the basketball game will be limited to just two platforms.

Crossplay has been one of the most requested features for the NBA 2K franchise for years running. The reasons why Visual Concepts took so long to implement crossplay aren't clear, though fans suspect it has to do with the NBA 2K franchise's yearly release schedule. NBA 2K23 did implement MyTEAM cross-progression within console families, so PlayStation 4 players and Xbox One players could upgrade to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S while carrying over their microtransactions and wallets.

NBA 2K24 will be another step forward for the franchise in terms of shared play across platforms. 2K and Visual Concepts announced via a new trailer that NBA 2K24 would be the first game in the franchise to feature crossplay. Crossplay will be immediately available when NBA 2K24 launches on September 8, but there's a catch.

The catch is that crossplay for NBA 2K24 won't be available across all platforms, or even most supported platforms. Visual Concepts has only enabled crossplay between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of NBA 2K24. That means that not only will PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One not support crossplay, but neither will PC. It's unclear why only two platforms will support crossplay, but it likely has to do with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S having higher development priority over other platforms.

Crossplay will support all multiplayer game modes in NBA 2K24. That includes co-op matches, online tournaments, and casual games. More information about NBA 2K24's MyTEAMS will likely be made available closer to launch.

Even with the restrictions on which platforms NBA 2K24 will support crossplay on, this is a major step forward for the franchise.

NBA 2K24 launches September 8 on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
