Highlights

  • Despite showcasing the largest roster yet, Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections still focuses more on Naruto than his son Boruto, leaving fans disappointed in Boruto's underrepresented status in gaming.
  • The game features remastered campaign content centered around Naruto, with Boruto being prominently featured in a story centered around the game's original characters.
  • Although the base content of Storm Connections doesn't seem to include the Boruto time skip, there is a possibility of DLC featuring Two Blue Vortex to be added later, which could expand the game's roster and adapt Boruto's story arc.

Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections is set to bring the Naruto franchise further into the next generation later this year as the next entry in CyberConnect 2's arena fighter series. Despite featuring the largest roster of the Ultimate Ninja Storm games yet, Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections is yet another recent game that places its emphasis on Naruto rather than his son. With the recent release of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, the younger Uzumaki’s underrepresented status in gaming has become more obvious than ever.

While Boruto still is a major part of the game, content from his own series doesn't actually seem to be much of a focus. Storm Connections will be loaded with remastered campaign content from the Ultimate Ninja Storm games that came before, all of which is centered around Naruto. Rather than having all of his own story arcs adapted in the same fashion, Boruto is set to be more prominently featured in a story instead centered around Storm Connections’ own original characters. Still, the Boruto time skip opens an opportunity for DLC characters and other expansion content to build out the game's roster even more.

The Strange Timing of Boruto's Time Skip

Boruto Uzumaki Post Timeskip Design-1

In the midst of the hype surrounding Storm Connections’ upcoming release, Boruto has already gone through a time skip and entered its second part in Two Blue Vortex. Focused on an older, edgier version of the character that fans have been anticipating for years, Boruto’s latest arc has already been a huge departure from where he originated. With Storm Connections seeming to be purely focused on depicting his younger days, games’ lack of continuity has become more apparent than ever.

The lack of proper Boruto adaptation content may seem normal to fans by now, but Naruto never suffered from the same problem. Having received a multitude of game releases throughout both of its parts, the latest developments in the world of Naruto appeared frequently in these adaptations that were released alongside other media. Boruto has yet to receive the same treatment, but that doesn’t mean Storm Connections can’t get new content in the future.

The Potential for Two Blue Vortex DLC in Storm Connections

The release of Storm Connections is less than two months away, making it reasonable to expect that no more reveals are yet to come. The upcoming title's base content appears to have no place for the Boruto time skip, but its DLC roadmap could end up telling a different story. With a season pass already set to feature five additional characters that have yet to be revealed, there is a decent chance that Two Blue Vortex may end up represented after all. Only two chapters into its run as of September, perhaps a few more months is just what Boruto needs to establish a more adaptable story arc.

Storm Connections is retreading old ground by primarily focusing on Naruto's past adventures, but this collection of remastered campaigns could be a sign of the original series’ end in gaming. By honoring the history of Naruto and providing the most complete adaptation of its story yet, Storm Connections could end up serving as a bookend to the Ultimate Ninja Storm games as a whole. As its publication continues, story DLC based on Two Blue Vortex could eventually make Storm Connections a package maxed out with content and finally in need of moving on. If the Naruto x Boruto aspect of the title indicates anything, it’s that this game may be intended to finally pass the torch after all.

Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections will be released on November 17 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
