In the world of Naruto, there are only a handful of figures that have had a monumental effect on the world and its history. From iconic villains who could throw the world into an endless dream state to others who could master and control all different aspects of Chakra, the legend of such figures has passed on throughout time. However, none can claim the same level of strength and influence that was held by the Sage of the Six Paths.

The Sage, whose real name was Hagoromo Otsutsuki, was essentially a godlike figure in the world of Naruto and is widely regarded as the ancestor of all Shinobi due to his creation of Ninshu, which was the original form of Ninjutsu. Since he was the first person to find out the nature of Chakra, he was able to do things that were never even thought to be possible, so let's see who Hagoromo was and why he's remembered all these years later!

Hagoromo's Origins

Being the elder of two sons born to Kaguya Otsutsuki, Hagoromo had incredible abilities from birth, owing to his lineage being from an alien species that traveled from planet to planet, draining them of their life force. Due to Kaguya having eaten the fruit of the God Tree, she gained immense Chakra and powerful abilities, which she used to end all wars at the time. Since his mother had such incredible powers, they were passed down to Hagoromo and his brother Hamura when they were born.

However, Kaguya was angered by the fact that her special Chakra was being spread to others, because of which she merged with the God Tree and formed the Ten Tails, the most powerful Tailed Beast, and went on a rampage to reclaim all her lost Chakra. Teaming up with his brother, Hagoromo was able to defeat the Ten Tails and proceeded to house it within his own body, becoming its Jinchuriki. From here, he would travel around the world, gifting Chakra to everyone and bringing peace to the planet.

The Sons Of The Sage

After Hagoromo went on to gain all the power and spread his message of peace across the globe, he eventually had 2 sons; Indra and Asura. Knowing that he was not an immortal being and that his time on the planet was limited, Hagoromo wanted to choose an heir to pass down his message of Ninshu to keep peacetime alive forever.

The older of his sons was Indra, who was naturally gifted at everything to do with Chakra as he inherited the abilities of his father and could also use them effortlessly. His younger son, Asura, was the exact opposite and seemingly had no natural talent. Despite this, Asura was an extremely hard worker, so, despite all the challenges he faced with his abilities, he always found a way to make it work by breaking past his limits and making friends along the way.

When it came to finally choosing his successor, the Sage gave his sons the mission to revive a foreign land, which Indra completed swiftly, but Asura would not complete until a year later. After learning that Asura took this long because he sought out the help of the people living there, Hagoromo decided that Asura was a far better fit to become the next leader and chose him as the successor to spread peace throughout the world.

Enraged at this, Indra declared war on his family and ran away from his home, adopting the new goal to destroy Ninshu due to being prodded on by Black Zetsu. This hatred was very potent, as Indra and Asura battled for their beliefs and to maintain power. Ultimately, Indra lost and was forced to retreat, forming a sect/clan of his own which would later go on to become the Uchiha Clan. From here on out, Indra and Asura would reincarnate again and again over centuries, with Indra's reincarnations seeking to destroy and Asura's reincarnations wanting to protect.

Abilities Of The Sage

Being the progenitor of Chakra and the strongest Shinobi to ever exist in the world of Naruto, Hagoromo had access to many abilities that seemed Godlike, even to the Shinobi of the world. It was only due to his nature as an Otsutsuki and the powerful unique Chakra he was blessed with that he was able to defeat his mother, so let's take a look at some of the powerful abilities of the Sage of the Six Paths.

Unmatched Chakra Abilities

Being the first person to ever be born with Chakra, Hagoromo's understanding of it was unparalleled. Even without any prior training, he had an innate control over it as he often didn't need hand signs to use jutsu, and his versatility was incredible as well. His Chakra reserves were bolstered further upon becoming the Jinchuriki of the Ten Tails and became so great that his descendants benefited from his power.

Ninshu

Hagoromo's way of life was known as Ninshu and was an instrumental part of his teachings. Through this, he could share his Chakra with others, which went hand in hand with his dream of achieving world peace. It also allowed him to heal seemingly any injury or ailment that he wanted, hoping that it would help to bring all humans on the planet together.

Nature Transformation

Perhaps his most powerful ability, Hagoromo mastered all 5 of the nature transformations of Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, and Lightning Release. Combining this mastery with his perfection of the Yin-Yang Release, Hagoromo could create form out of nothing, which allowed him to create anything that he desired out of thin air. Using this ability, he was able to create all of the Tailed Beasts out of the remains of the Ten Tails.

Mangekyo Sharingan

After finding the body of his love interest, Hagoromo awakened his standard Sharingan, granting him incredible perception and powers. However, after fatally injuring his brainwashed brother, Hagoromo would manifest a Mangekyo Sharingan, which allowed him to use a Susanoo so powerful that he could compete with the Ten Tails., which he could also use with his Rinnegan.

Rinnegan

Hagoromo manifested the Rinnegan along with his Mangekyo Sharingan and was believed to be the only person to have ever mastered the 5 Chakra Natures. With the Rinnegan, he could use even more abilities, such as the Six Paths Technique, which is one of the strongest abilities in Naruto. These paths are the Deva Path, Asura Path, Human Path, Animal Path, Preta Path, and Naraka Path. There is said to be a seventh 'Outer Path' that allows the user to revive anyone from the dead.
