Naruto is home to a slew of different ninja clans that have borne some of the most talented ninjas in history. One such clan is the Uchiha clan. It is among the four noble clans of the Hidden Leaf, and yet it has always been ostracized by the villagers.

The Uchiha clan was founded centuries prior to the start of Naruto. The Uchiha are armed with the Sharingan, one of the Three Great Dojutsu, making them fearsome fighters. Several members of the Uchiha clan have played crucial roles in the story, but there are still many things that do not make sense about them.

1 The Curse of Hatred

Indra Otsitsuki from Naruto

The Uchiha clan members are the descendants of Indra Otsutsuki, the elder son of Hagoromo Otsutsuki. Indra was a genius who discovered how to utilize chakra to create ninjutsu. Despite being so young, he was leagues ahead of almost all of the adults. After seeing his talent, everyone expected Indra to succeed Hagoromo, but the Sage of Six Paths had other plans. He gave both his sons a test, and they passed using different methods. Hagoromo judged that Asura would be his successor.

Needless to say, this decision did not go down well with Indra. He felt betrayed and disgraced, so he decided to challenge his younger brother to a duel. Unfortunately for Indra, Asura had grown a lot stronger, and he managed to defeat him effortlessly. Indra retreated, but he swore never to forgive his brother. The rivalry between the two brothers continued for many years. They were reincarnated several times, and it wasn't until Naruto and Sasuke's era that it was broken. Considering Asura's descendants were not afflicted with any type of curse, it didn't make sense to have all the Uchiha suffer from the Curse of Hatred.

2 Shisui Killing Himself

Shisui loses one eye

Shisui Uchiha was considered to be the strongest Uchiha of his time. He was exposed to the horrors of war at an early age, and it left a deep and lasting impression on the young Uchiha. When he learned of Fugaku's decision to start a coup d'etat, he decided that he would use his powers to stop it from happening.

Shisui's plan would have prevented a lot of bloodshed, but his plans were thwarted by Danzo, who used the Root to attack him. Shisui lost his right eye, but he managed to get away safely. After the incident, he met Itachi, gave him the remaining eye, and subsequently jumped off the cliff. This was an extremely odd decision by Shisui, as he could have simply gone to Hiruzen and told him about what had transpired. Shisui's suicide only complicated things and created a massive burden for Itachi to bear.

3 Why They Got Betrayed

Itachi Uchiha Clan Massacre

The members of the Uchiha clan were extremely powerful. Their power was both a blessing and a curse for them, as they were considered potential threats to the sovereignty of the Hidden Leaf. The tension between the Uchiha and the Hidden Leaf was at an all-time high during Hiruzen's reign, so the elders of the Hidden Leaf had to come up with a solution to stop things from escalating.

Danzo preferred to kill all of the Uchiha, while Hiruzen wanted a peaceful solution. In the end, the responsibility to take care of the problem fell on Itachi's shoulders. Considering Itachi was a smart person, it doesn't make sense that he chose to slaughter his fellow clan members to protect the people who despised him and his clan. It was a nonsensical decision on Itachi's part.

4 Abandoning Their Leader

Uchiha and Senju form an alliance

The Uchiha were known to be quite emotionally attached to their family members. They were extremely close to one another, and it was extremely difficult to drive a wedge between them. During the Warring States Period, Madara Uchiha led the clan against the Senju and the other clans. The legendary warrior wanted the Uchiha to be dominant, for both selfish and selfless reasons. Madara knew what it meant to lose a loved one, so he wanted to save his siblings. Even when all of them died, Madara signed a truce with Hashirama, bringing an end to years of fighting.

Together, they founded the Hidden Leaf village, and it was Madara who coined the name. Given his contribution, Madara should have been made the Hokage, but he was snubbed. Once Madara learned what the villagers thought, he decided to take the Uchiha clan and get away from the Hidden Leaf. Sadly, the members of his own clan decided to stay put and leave Madara on his own. This was a rather strange decision, considering the Uchiha cared more about their own clan members than the others.

5 The Unnecessary Massacre

During Tobirama's reign as the Hokage, the Uchiha clan was subjected to humiliation time and time again. Tobirama was always wary of them, and he went to great lengths to limit their influence in matters involving the Hidden Leaf. The mistreatment of the Uchiha continued even after Tobirama's death and reached a boiling point during Hiruzen's time.

The Third Hokage failed to understand why the Uchiha were orchestrating the coup d'etat. Due to his carelessness, Danzo was free to do whatever he wanted. Given his racist ideology, Danzo forced Itachi to murder all the Uchiha clan members. The massacre could have been totally avoided, and not every single Uchiha had to die. This was a completely senseless decision.
