  • Hamura Otsutsuki played a crucial role in sealing Kaguya, often overlooked alongside his brother Hagoromo.
  • Hamura's legacy lives on through Toneri and the Hyuga Clan, contributing to the world of Naruto.
  • Hamura's descendants on the moon guarded Kaguya's resting place and maintained balance on Earth, while others formed the Hyuga Clan on Earth.

The world of Naruto has largely been shaped by the original Otsutsuki members, and while Hagoromo is duly credited as the progenitor of ninjutsu, his brother Hamura’s role is often sidelined and overlooked. Hamura was a key figure in defeating Kaguya and sealing her away on the moon, yet his role in the entire ordeal is often left out.

This has also led to his fate and legacy falling into obscurity, which was further exacerbated by the fact that his only screen time in Naruto is confined to anime-only content. However, Hamura’s fate is of considerable importance for the narrative, even more so as his legacy lives on in the form of Toneri and the Hyuga Clan.

Hamura’s Role in Sealing Kaguya

First Appearance

Naruto Shippuden, Episode 420, "Eight Gates Released Formation"

Debut Date

July 23, 2015

Kaguya’s defeat is often associated with Hagoromo Otsutsuki, yet Hamura played an equally important role in sealing away his mother. Hamura was initially placed under a genjutsu by Kaguya, forcing him to fight Hagoromo to the death. However, the latter was able to revive Hamura through a talisman gifted by the toad sage Gamamura, giving way to a fated battle between Kaguya and the two brothers.

In the final battle, both Hamura and Hagoromo combined their strengths to incapacitate Kaguya with one final blow, consequently sealing her away in a colossal Chibaku Tensei. While Hagoromo took charge of splitting the Ten-Tails into Tailed Beasts, Hamura resigned himself to the newly-formed moon to guard Kaguya’s resting place and look after humanity from afar.

On Earth, Hagoromo took charge to create order and prepare the next generation to take up the mantle. However, the Ten-Tails' extraction from his body rendered him frail and weak, limiting his lifespan considerably. While Hagoromo succumbed to the toll of Ten-Tails’ extraction, Hamura carried on the Otsutsuki name through his own progeny, albeit on the moon.

Hamura and his descendants took to the moon for two key purposes; guarding Kaguya’s resting place and keeping the Ten-Tails’ husk in check. However, their stay on the moon was also to ensure a balance of power on Earth, with the Otsutsuki Clan members merely acting as guardians from a far off place.

Come visit once in a while. We won't be that far apart.

Hamura lived a long life before finally meeting his demise at a ripe age, passing away with his Otsutsuki descendants by his side on the moon. Before passing, Hamura left behind his celestial decree to guide his clan members, with instructions to safeguard humanity and look over them for millennia to come.

Hamura’s Legacy

Despite being treated as a mere ancillary character in Kaguya’s backstory, Hamura has remained an influential figure in the world of Naruto. While his descendants were never as strong as Hagoromo’s, he was still able to leave behind a fruitful legacy in the form of the Byakugan and the Tenseigan.

When it comes to Genjutsu in Naruto, who is the strongest wielder of this technique?

The Byakugan was inherited by his descendants on Earth, who later took on the form of the Hyuga Clan. The Tenseigan, on the other hand, is a more muddled aspect of his legacy, as it was almost used as a tool to almost destroy all of humanity. The wielders of these powers continue to live on and carry Hamura’s legacy, keeping his bloodline alive.

The Hyuga Clan

Hinata's Two Lion Attack

Hamura’s descendants were split into two, with some resigning themselves to guarding the Demonic Statue on the moon with Hamura, while others continued to live on Earth. The ones that stayed back inherited the Byakugan and eventually took the shape of the Hyuga Clan, a noble and tight-knit clan with a prized Kekkei Genkai.

Byakugan Princess! Do not let the world my elder brother created come to an end.

However, the Hyuga Clan wasn’t entirely cut off from Hamura, as he made an appearance in front of Hinata Hyuga to warn her about Toneri Otsutsuki’s plans. Referring to her as the “Byakugan Princess,” Hamura acknowledged Hinata as a true descendant of his bloodline, and endowed her with his own chakra to stop Toneri in his tracks.

Toneri Otsutsuki

Toneri Otsusuki

Toneri is the last of Hamura’s descendants on the moon, and the only Otsutsuki to keep his Byakugan, as the rest of his kin gave up their Kekkei Genkai to feed the Energy Vessel on the moon. Toneri misinterpreted Hamura’s celestial decree, believing that he wanted his descendants to kill all of mankind if they were to misuse chakra for bloodshed and war.

After observing mankind till the completion of a millennium, Toneri sprung into action and decided to wipe out humanity by crashing the moon into the Earth after awakening his Tenseigan. His plans were eventually thwarted after Naruto defeated him and restored the Tenseigan back to the Byakugan. In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Toneri is revealed to be keeping watch on humanity while staying on the moon, staying true to Hamura’s initial goal and his celestial decree.
