Naomi is getting a live-action series that has finally got a release date. The series will air starting January 2022 on The CW, the home of other DC shows such as Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Black Lightning, Batwoman, and Superman & Lois.
The CW's Naomi will be produced by Ava DuVernay (Selma, A Wrinkle In Time, and 13th) and is expected to explore contemporary issues and social commentary that causes compelling conversations. Shows that have deeper meaning are always more appreciated than the surface-leveled stories, as they help teach fans more about the people that inhabit the roles or are inspired by them.
The CW announced January 11, 2022, as the premiere date for Naomi while unveiling its 2022 mid-season lineup. Because it will air on Tuesday nights, assuming it reoccurs weekly, then the show will debut new episodes on the same day as The Flash. At this time, there's no telling if Naomi will be sticking to the small screen or if she jumps the theatrical features in the future. Whether or not she moves back and forth between DC's many film and television universes, there appears to be plenty of opportunities to have her meet other heroes on the show. The Naomi teaser that was released during DC FanDome showed her get a view of Superman flying at fast speeds in the sky.
Naomi has a very interesting backstory among the crowd of the DC comic book heroes that appears to be faithfully adapted for The CW series. She comes from an alternate universe where the Earth's ozone layer permitted a level of radiation through its atmosphere. This radiation affected 29 different individuals who all gained superpowers at the cost of not being able to reproduce. This resulted in a minor civil war that ended with one of these 29 people miraculously giving birth to a child who quickly became a sought-after target of interest.
This child was transferred into the prime DC universe, where heroes that fans are familiar with are residing. Naomi now grew up among heroes like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. She has a wide range of superhuman abilities such as durability, flight, energy manipulation, superhuman strength, and the power to revert to her human/superhuman form at will. The only drawback to her immense power is that during the time of her figuring out her abilities, she runs the risk of draining herself and fainting due to the exhaustion the power can put on her body.
One may wonder why Naomi is coming to the CW instead of HBO Max. The CW shows are still going, but it often appears that DC is making HBO Max the new home for its superheroes moving forward. The teaser for Naomi looked very good. The lighting, cinematography, and even sound felt like movie quality, but if Naomi is solely on CW, let's hope that it does more for the character than just being a small screen show and reaches the same heights as DC's biggest heroes.
Naomi will premiere on January 11, 2022, on The CW.
