His unbridled optimism, kindness, selfless nature, indomitable will, and overwhelming strength, quickly allowed him to rise through the ranks of U.A. High School's most powerful students and become the strongest of them all. In fact, he was held in such high regard that many touted him as the next No.1 Pro Hero and the successor to All Might.

U.A. High School's Big 3

Mirio's first formal appearance was during Class 1-A's meeting with the Big 3 of U.A. High School, who were the trio of third years said to be the strongest among the entire student body. While he had displayed his Quirk while interacting with Deku in a more informal setting, his presence in this setting while addressing the entire class was the first hint of the immense power he wielded as the strongest of the Big 3. After his attempt at conversing with the class fell flat, Mirio challenged the entire class to a fight, stating that a demonstration would be better than just words.

During the course of this match up, Mirio soundly defeated each and every student in the class without so much as a hint of trouble, with only Deku being able to even anticipate or follow his movements. This was all possible due to Mirio's unique Quirk, Permeation, which allowed him to make his entire body, or just certain parts of it, intangible. With this, he could phase through attacks, disappear into and reappear from the ground, or even teleport from one point to another by aiming in the right direction and making himself tangible while submerged, which would displace him above ground instantly due to his solid body not being able to occupy the space inside another solid substance.

What A Real Hero Is Capable Of

Following his sound defeat of the entire class, Mirio inquired whether his Quirk seemed too powerful to be true. Although many in Class 1-A agreed, Mirio explained his Quirk in more detail along, stating that while intangible, he cannot breathe or use any of his senses, and was forced to train his instincts and raw physical strength to make up for it. He then went on to state that it was not a matter of his Quirk being too powerful, but rather, his strength came from his ability to use his powers efficiently and creatively, exploiting their benefits to the maximum and mitigating their weaknesses through intense training.

This demonstration of what Mirio was capable of had the desired effect on the students of Class 1-A. They realized that on dedicating themselves towards truly understanding their Quirks and refining their applications, they would be able to hone the advantages of their abilities and gain untold power just like Mirio did. Beyond showing them what a third year U.A. student is capable of, this display of Mirio's abilities also provided the students of Class 1-A with a goal to aspire towards, highlighting that any Quirk could be channeled in a variety of ways and made combat ready.

A New Star Player

My Hero Academia Showdowns We Want To See in Season 7 Mirio and Overhaul

Even prior to the Shie Hassaikai Raid to save Eri, Mirio's Quirk and physical conditioning were already extremely impressive, with his fight against Class 1-A only offering a taste of his true power. In fact, it was only in the fight against Overhaul and the Eight Bullets of the Shie Hassaikai, that Mirio's real strength was shown. The spectacle of Mirio pushing himself to his limits to save Eri was an awe-inspiring sight to behold, as the young hero took on the most powerful members of Overhaul's organization, including Overhaul himself, and gained the upper hand in no time.

In fact, Mirio was able to easily defeat Shin Nemoto and Deidoro Sakaki, before turning his attention to Overhaul and Hari Kurono — also known as Chronostasis. Even when outnumbered, Mirio displayed his superb mastery over Permeation, instantly shifting between his opponents through the ground, outmaneuvering their every move, and selectively making his body intangible to phase through their attacks while dishing out massive damage to both his adversaries.

Overhaul was forced to acknowledge Mirio's strength, and resorted to targeting Eri to force him to abstain from using his Quirk. This was the only way he could even land a blow on Mirio, as his ability to deform environments was rendered null and void by Mirio's intangibility. Mirio was even able to find solutions to this, and began to overwhelm the pair. If not for the Quirk-destroying bullet, Mirio would have easily emerged victorious in the fight, without requiring the intervention of Deku or Sir Nighteye. While this was the last display of Mirio's abilities that My Hero Academia fans would see for quite some time, the fight against Overhaul exemplified how Permeation's capabilities were the highlight of the Shie Hassaikai Arc, as viewers got a taste of what a real hero could do.
